Pioneers of the local rock en español
scene, La Ruta was formed in the early '90s by three Dominican
musiciansin New
York City. Originally a tropical/rock hybrid equally
influenced by The Police and Dominican rocker Luis Dias,
the band later took on a more power-pop
oriented sound, a la Foo Fighters,
Oasis, The Posies and Cheap Trick.
Despite various lineup changes over the years--local veteran
Jim Jackson took over the drum chair in 1996--
and a series of guests (Willie Mosquera,
Rafael "Xuxi" Lazzaro, Damian Anger, Jorge Subervi, Alex Guerra)
taking over bass duties since 1999, the band
has performed regularly in area clubs such as Spiral, Underground,
La Kueva, SOB's,
and the legendary CBGB and Palladium.
