Deep Space Noin
Episode 1: Siren's Song

"Ensign Winner, I've picked up a life form on the other side of this rock formation, you come with me. The rest of you return to the ship."

"Yes Officer Maxwell." The away party transported off the planet's surface, all except Ensign Winner.

A strange, but melodious sound drifted over the rocks. Duo and Quatre proceeded with caution, phasers pointed ahead of them. When they had successfully crossed over the rocks they found a young green skinned woman singing.

Officer Maxwell attempted to make contact. "We come in peace." The woman didn't stop singing, but she did turn around. Her eyes seemed to pulse and soon Duo Maxwell found his will sapped away from him. He proceeded towards the alien and wrapped his arms around her. He rubbed his body against hers and she responded in kind.

"Officer Maxwell, what are you doing?" Quatre proceeded towards the couple. He attempted to pull Duo off of the alien, but was completely unsuccessful. Duo was stuck to her like glue. Quatre managed to turn Duo's face towards him. He immediately saw the problem. Duo's eyes were glazed over and he knew that the man had been placed in some kind of trance.

Quatre slapped Duo in the face. "Hey what did you do that for?!" Duo detached himself from the woman and looked at Quatre.

"You were in a trance."

"I was?" Duo looked skeptical, he seemed to have forgotten about the woman undulating behind him.

"Yes, this creature seems to have some kind of ability to hypnotize people."

"What creature?" Duo looked around and then he saw her. His mouth dropped open and his eyes immediately glazed over.

"DUO!" Quatre slapped Duo on his ear.

"What!? What the hell did you hit me for?" Duo rubbed his ear looking at Quatre angrily.

"Stop looking at her."

"Who?" Duo tried to turn his head, but Quatre grabbed his chin.

"Whenever you look at her, you fall into a trance, so don't look at her." Quatre admonished him. The woman turned her pulsing eyes towards Quatre, but they had no effect on the blonde ensign.

"Relena?"

"I'm here Quatre."

"Please transport Duo and me to the ship." Officer Peacecraft relayed the request for transport to the transporter room and soon Duo and Quatre were back on the helm.

"Did this alien say anything to either one of you?" The captain asked.

"No sir, she was singing but maybe she was just humming. The translators weren't able to decipher anything." Quatre explained.

"Honestly I don't remember hearing or seeing any alien." Duo couldn't believe that he had been in a passionate embrace with a beautiful green skinned alien and didn't remember it. Quatre had told the captain about his falling into a trance, but he hadn't told him the rest.

"I am going to send another away team to the planet's surface. Ensign Winner, you'll be part of that team since the alien didn't seem to ensnare you. Officer Maxwell, I want you to see Dr. Po."

"Well according to my tests, your brain was flooded with testosterone. It seems to have blocked your normal brain wave patterns, thus affecting your short term memory." Dr. Po said.

"So you're saying that anybody who came into contact with this woman will go into a trance."

"Well, any man. At least that's what my tests seem to indicate, but I must be missing something because Ensign Winner wasn't affected."

"You're not the one missing anything doc." Duo muttered under his breath. Sally heard, but chose to ignore him.

"I see Dr. Po. I should have sent an entirely female away team. Officer Peacecraft, contact the away team and ask them to return immediately."

"Yes captain."

"I understand Relena, we're on our way back now. We didn't run into the alien this time. In fact I'm not picking up any life forms down here. It's wierd, it's like she just disappeared." Ensign Winner took one last look around and gathered the away team together.

"Five to transport." Quatre said as he tapped his communicator and the entire away team disappeared.

Duo took one more quick look around the hall to make sure no one was around and then escorted his guest into his quarters. He pulled the helmet off his companion and stared into devastatingly deep blue eyes. His eyes glazed over and he dropped to his knees, wrapping his arms around the alien's waist. She began to sing.

"Hhhilll eeh Dddeeeeeee, Hhhilll ahh DDDeeeeooooooOOOOOO."

The alien leaned down and began to smooth her hands over Duo's hair and face. She wrapped her arms around him and began to trail wet kisses down his face and arms. Duo responded in kind and soon they were entangled in the throes of passion.

When Duo awoke he looked at the green skinned woman lying in his arms. She was so quiet. It was actually very unnerving. Duo looked at her closely. It seemed as though she wasn't breathing. Was this normal? He thought she might be dead. He couldn't call the doctor, then the captian would find out he had snuck the alien on board. He'd be in a lot of trouble, but what if she was really sick. Duo tried to wake her. He shook her and yelled. He even poured water on her. She didn't react at all. He had no choice.

"Officer Maxwell to sick bay. I have a medical emergency in my quarters."

"Actually I think that her death was natural."

"Natural? But she's so young."

"She's not human Duo, I have no way of knowing how old she is, but from the tests I've run it looks like she just peacefully drifted away."

"But why?" Duo was very upset, even though he really didn't know Hilde (he decided to call her that based on her song), he had developed quite a bit of affection for her in the past 24 hours.

"Well I have a theory on that, but it requires that I give you an exam, and that you tell me everything that happened between you and the alien," Duo gave the hologram a hurt look, Dr. Po sighed, "You and Hilde." Duo blushed deeply.

"Uhh, well we just, you know, talked and stuff." Duo's eyes roamed over sick bay nervously.

"You talked? From what I understand the universal translator couldn't decipher her speech."

"Well yeah, it was a one-sided conversation."

"Please Duo it is important that you tell me the truth. Your health could be at risk."

Duo sighed he knew that Sally was right, he just really didn't want anyone else to hear this. "Can you ask Dorothy to leave?" Dorothy Catalonia was known to have a really big mouth.

"Miss Catalonia, would you get my tricorder for me. I think I left it on the holodeck."

"Yes Dr. Po." Dorothy left the room and Sally turned back towards Duo.

"Okay Duo, what do you have to tell me."

Duo told Sally of last nights events, this morning's discovery and let her give him an examination.

"Are you gonna tell the captain about this?" Duo squirmed a little, he was gonna get it for sure now.

"I have to, there is a dead alien on board the ship. The captain will want to know how she got here."

"Yeah I know. I guess you have no choice. So do you know why Hilde died?"

"I think so. I think that she was waiting on that planet for someone she could mate with. After her biological imperative was satisfied, she died."

"Her biological imperative?" Duo had a really bad feeling about this.

"Yes Duo. She impregnated you. I can detect at least seven distinct embryos within you right now."

"Go away!"

Duo just sat there.

Bing

"Duo please let me in. I want to help."

Quatre was really persistent, it had been over ten minutes.

Did he know? Duo didn't want anyone to know, but eventually everyone would. The things inside him were probably gonna get bigger. Duo started to cry agian. He ignored the buzzing of his friend and wallowed in self pity.

Two hours later.

Bing.

"Go away Quatre! I don't feel like talking."

"It is Wufei Chang. Open this door Officer Maxwell or I will open it for you." Duo sighed, he knew this was coming. He got up and walked over to the door, it opened automatically.

"Come with me Duo." Wufei led Duo down to the holding area. He didn't place him in a cell, just had him sit down at a nearby table.

"Well Mr. Maxwell, you've really outdone yourself this time." If Duo didn't know that vulcans were incapable of humor, he'd swear that the Cheif of Security, Wufei Chang, was really enjoying this. "Please explain to me how you managed to sneak the alien aboard."

"Look I thought Dr. Po would've explained it to you. My brain was flooded with hormones..."

"Yes, testosterone to be precise."

"Right and that affected my short term memory so I really don't know how I got her on board, I don't remember doing it." Duo never had much patience around Wufei, he was so damn rigid.

"And you think that because you don't remember committing the crime you aren't guilty?"

"I didn't say that, but I mean she was affecting my mind. I don't see how I can be responsible for my actions under those circumstances."

"Dr. Po said nothing about the alien controlling your mind. Your actions were your own, even if you don't remember them and you will be held responsible. I, of course, reviewed the transporter's log and there were records of an unknown crewman beaming to and from the surface, there is however no record of the alien returning with you. This leads me to believe that she must've found some other way to board the ship and even though she is dead, that presents a great security risk. If your memory returns you are obligated to report it to me or someone else in security."

"I'm sure he knows that. Duo how are feeling?" The captian's entrance stopped Wufei's interrogation momentarily.

"I feel fine. I mean I don't feel any different."

"I understand you are now pregnant." The captain's tone was entirely serious, but there was a momentary flicker of laughter in his eyes. "No symptoms so far?" Yep, there was definitely some humor there.

"No sir. I was given a clean bill of health from Dr. Po and can return to my position at any time. That is, if you'll let me sir."

"Well Duo, unlike Mr. Chang, I am sympathetic to your situation. I realize that your actions were influenced by the alien and I don't feel any need to reprimand you. I do however worry about your health. I am worried that these embryos within you may be dangerous and I am going to order you to sick bay until the doctor can assure me that they are not parasitic and your life isn't in danger." Zechs looked very serious now.

"Parasitic?" 'Oh man just when I thought things couldn't get any worse.' Duo thought.

"I think I'll let the doctor explain it to you. You're dismissed."

Duo got up and went to sick bay as ordered. He wondered what Zechs meant when he said parasitic. Despite what everyone thought Duo wasn't an idiot. He knew that parasites fed off of their hosts, sometimes resulting in the hosts death.

"Yes Duo, that's exactly what the captain and I are afraid of. It may be necessary to remove the embryos from your body."

"Hey I'm all for that but, well can they survive if you do that?"

"That's the problem I don't know. The way I figure it there are two possiblities. One: The embryos are parasitic and as they mature they will feed on your soft tissue and fluids until they are old enough to fent for themselves, at which time they will emerge from your body." Duo had a look of pure horror on his face.

"Two: The male of the speices that *Hilde* comes from was actually suited to carry and nuture these embryos. If this is the case then it is possible that they can adapt to your body and we won't have to remove them until later. This would be ideal because they are more likely to survive if we extract later rather than sooner. Either way they will have to be surgically removed from you." Duo still looked a little horrified, but it wasn't quite as bad as before.

"Of course if you want them removed now, I will do that as well. It is your choice whether or not you want to see this pregnancy through."

"I'm glad you finally decided to talk to me. I've been very worried about you Duo." Quatre looked at his friend who was pale and withdrawn, totally unlike the Duo Maxwell he was used to.

"Yeah well I don't know what to do. I need some serious help. Do you know what's going on Quatre? Does the crew know?" Duo looked at Quatre uneasily, this was so humiliating and he really didn't want everyone to know about this.

"All I know is that the alien we saw on the surface was found dead and that you are involved. What's going on Duo?" Quatre reached over and laid a hand on Duo's arm.

"Well I don't remember doing it, but I somehow snuck that alien on board. Anyway she and I, well we sort of spent the night together and when I woke up she was dead." Quatre had a shocked look on his face, but didn't interrupt Duo. "Well the doc said that the death was natural, that she died because she had fulfilled her biological imperative, which was to place these alien embryos inside my body. Sally doesn't know if they are dangerous or not, but she said that I can have them removed if I want to."

Quatre didn't say anything for a couple of minutes, but he looked at Duo with sympathy and affection. "Wow Duo that's pretty heavy. How do you feel?"

"Oh I feel okay, I mean if Sally hadn't showed me the embryos on the tricorder I wouldn't even know I had them in me."

Quatre nodded. "Are you scared?" He asked tentatively.

"Hell yeah, I mean they could be parasitic and eat me fromt he inside out, and even if they aren't they are inside of me. I'm pregnant and I'm a guy!" Duo had gotten up from his chair and was now walking around the room, gesturing with his hands.

"But you can have them removed?" Quatre asked softly.

Duo stopped his circuit around the room and stared at the wall. "Yeah."

"And they would die if you did that?"

"Sally doesn't know. Maybe." Duo answered quietly. He sat back down as though his spine had been removed. He kept his eyes trained on the floor. "I don't want to kill them. I mean it seems pretty selfish of me doesn't it?"

"No, not really." Quatre replied, but his voice held no conviction.

"There are seven of them and only one of me. It is selfish, but I can't help it. I don't want to be an incubator for some alien race! I mean it's so not fair! Besides what if they are an evil race, I might be doing the universe a favor by getting rid of them."

"Yeah you might."

"But Hilde wasn't dangerous."

"She did manipulate you."

"Yeah but I didn't mind it much at the time." Duo smiled it was a nice memory. "Quatre what would you do?"

"Me? Oh Duo, I can't answer that. This is a decision you have to make for yourself."

Duo didn't say anything, he just continued to stare at the floor.

"I have created an environment which simulates the inside of a human body. It is temperature regulated to stay at 98.6 degrees fahrenheit and it has been enhanced with some of the nutrients found within the alien's, err I mean Hilde's body. I believe it will serve as an effective incubation chamber for the embryos. I am still a little wary about removing them, but I feel that it is necessary to insure your continued well being."

Duo breathed a huge sigh of relief. He felt like a giant rock had been taken off of his shoulders. "So I don't have to carry these things around inside of me and they're gonna be okay anyway?"

"I hope so. I want to remove one first as a trial run and if all goes well then the others will be removed shortly thereafter."

"Yeah okay, I'll leave it all up to you Dr. Po. So when do you want to start?" Duo asked excitedly.

"Duo you do realize this is surgery that I'm talking about and you will be incapacitated for a short time?"

"Yeah I know but hey if it gets me off duty for awhile, I'm all for it!" Duo replied enthusiastically.

Duo woke up in sick bay feeling tired but pain-free. Seeing him awake, Dorothy immediately began to take him vitals.

"Hey how'd it go?" Duo asked weakly.

"Well you seem to be in good shape Duo and the embryo is still alive. Since we never saw *Hilde* alive, we really don't know whether the embryo is healthy or not. It has a steady heartbeat, that's all we can go on."

Duo got up slowly. "Where is it?" Dorothy turned her head towards the corner where a green fetus was floating in a fluid filled tube.

Duo walked over and looked at it curiously. It wasn't moving and he really couldn't tell anything by looking at it. It was about two inches long and an inch wide. Dorothy was standing behind him with the tricorder. Duo put his hand on the tube.

"Oh wow, that's interesting." Dorothy exclaimed.

"What?" Duo hadn't seen anything happen.

"It's heartbeat just increased." Dorothy swept her gaze from the tricorder to the embryo and back again.

"Really?" Duo took his hand off the tube and walked behind Dorothy so he could see over her shoulder.

"It just went back down." Dorothy said.

"Is that good or bad?" Duo asked.

"I don't know."

"Hmm, well I should get back to duty. Am I free to go?" Duo asked.

"Yeah you check out okay, but I suggest you get some more rest before returning to active duty, you are still weak from the operation."

"Okay." Duo pulled on his uniform and left. Dorothy continued to study the tricorder. The embryos heartbeat began to get weaker.

"Computer activate emergency holographic projection!" Sally Po appeared standing next to the embryo but it was too late. It's heartbeat had stopped.

Duo was lying on the couch staring up at the ceiling when Quatre came in.

"Are you okay?" He asked worriedly as he sat down in the chair opposite Duo.

"I don't know. I feel...numb, I guess."

"What went wrong?"

"They don't know, but apparently the little critters can't stand to be away from their papa." Duo said with a half smile that quickly disappeared.

"Oh Duo I'm so sorry." Quatre sat looking at his hands which were folded in his lap.

"You know at first I thought of them as ticks or tapeworms and I just wanted to get rid of them. Then I thought of them as this new alien race that we had to make contact with. But then when I saw the fetus in that tube, I don't know, I felt connected to it somehow. And when they told me it was dead, I felt really sad. I don't want any more of them to die Quatre and if they are taken out of my body, that's what'll happen." Duo sounded like he was defeated somehow. It worried Quatre.

"But Duo you aren't equipped to carry these embryos. I mean even if they aren't dangerous, you don't have a womb and you don't have a birth canal. Where are they going to come out of?"

"Believe me pally, I've been thinking a lot about that. A whole lot and it isn't a very pleasant thought, but I'm sure the doc'll figure something out. I just can't stand to see another one of them go, you know."

"But Duo there are six of them. It may not be physically possible for you to carry them all."

"Maybe not but Sally says the ones inside me are all looking good, as far as she can tell and it's not like she's given up, she's trying to figure out what went wrong and when she does, well then we'll try removing them then." Duo sounded much more like his old self. Once his mind was made up, there was no going back.

"Duo you sure about this?"

"Hell yeah. Just think of all the paternity leave I'm gonna get." Duo actually smiled at that, a real Duo Maxwell smile. It made Quatre smile too.
