You can’t handle the truth!
Does that create a picture of Jack Nicholson face screaming into the lens? This line from the movie, A Few Good Men, begins a soliloquy which is both moving and patriotic. Yet it leads to a harsh reality. Col. Nathan R. Jessep, played by Nicholson, is guilty, convicted by his own mouth. Swollen up with pride, Jessep didn’t even know he had done anything wrong. The truth had to be explained to him. The explanation of the truth would come during his trial.
Hold onto that thought. We will be back to it shortly.
My wife has been suffering through a lot of pain for years now. She said to me once, "You couldn’t handle it." Then she added something remarkable. "I wouldn’t want you to go through this kind of pain. I’d rather suffer this myself than watch you suffer."
Now that is love.
And this is love.
John 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
God, in His great love for us, came in the form of mortal flesh, in the person of Jesus Christ and said, by word and deed, that He would rather suffer and die, than to see us suffer throughout all eternity.
God does not want to see you suffer an eternity without Him. Therefore He made a way that you might live. Jessep boasted proudly of his position and authority, counting on what he had done as justification before the judge. In the end he was hauled away and bound in chains.
"But I am not guilty!" will be the cry of those who turn their backs on God’s gift of Salvation.
John 3
What they failed to understand is that they are already guilty.
Can you handle the truth?
The truth is, if you don’t have a saving faith in Jesus Christ, you will suffer an eternity of separation from the Love of God.
Don’t wait until judgment day to discover the truth.
