Paul presents...

A README.TXT WRITTEN IN LESS THAN FOUR-AND-A-HALF MINUTES
=========================================================

Here is my Quote Screensaver for Windows 95/98/NT/2K that I have been
working on for the last 5th of a decade or so. It has over...

FIFTY  M I L L I O N  QUOTES!!!!  Actually it has ALL THE QUOTES
IN THE W H O LE WORLD!!! PROBABLY MORE!!!!!!!

Well, you know now that I am unwell. And it has only fifteen
thousand quotes or so. But that's more than enough. If not, add
your own.

TO INSTALL
==========

If you downloaded the quote32.zip file - unzip, and run the
quote32.exe thing inside it. This will install the screensaver.

If you downloaded quote32.exe, then, hey - you're special. Just
run the file, and everything will be allllllright.

Then just go to the screensaver section of display properties,
and select Quote or whatever I've called it (it will be
Quotsomethingorother). Too easy. You should probably also click
on 'Settings' as well, to adjust whatever.

That's all. Except, you need the Visual Basic 5 runtime files.
You can get these heaps of places. You may already have them.
If the screensaver works first shot, no problem! Otherwise go to
my webpage and get 'em.

or download and run this file:

http://support.microsoft.com/download/support/mslfiles/msvbvm50.exe

You can tell if you need these files by whether the screensaver
works. If it just displays a stupid looking monitor thing in the
screensaver preview window instead of a quote, then you need to
download the runtime files.

OTHER THINGS
============

Current version is 4.1.0. However, expect this to change with
the next release.

This is freeware. You can use it and not pay anyone anything.

There is a 'Timed Quote' feature. This attempts to display the
quote for the time required to read it. ie. a longer quote will
display for a longer time. It works on a formula something like
1 second + 1/10th of a second for every letter in the quote. If
you would like to adjust these, no problem, just click on the
little thing next to this setting.

Standard fonts are a good thing to use if you've got lots of
weird fonts like WingDings. You know, the ones with stupid shapes
and things instead of letters. Once you see a quote come up in
WingDings, you will see what I mean. :)

The rest is pretty self-explanatory.

You can add your own quotes! I think the format is

	QUOTE|AUTHOR

for example:

	Quotes are good|Paul

If there's no author, there will be no author:

	Quotes are real good|

Those |'s are called pipes. Just look at the existing QUOTES.TXT
and see how you go.

SPECIAL NOTE FOR NT/2000 USERS
==============================

Hey you guys. You will need to change the path setting. Sad eh?
Go to the screen saver settings (bring up the thing that lets you
select which screensaver to use, select Quote32, then click on
Settings), and change "c:\Windows\Quotes.txt" to
"c:\WinNT\Quotes.txt".  Easy!

ERRORS 'N' THINGS LIKE THAT
===========================

I just love errors, or bugs in computing speak, in my work. If
you happen to come across one. I'd love to know about it. My
email address is penn@mindless.com. So if you find an error -
you'll know about it don't worry - please let me know. But I need
information! More is usually better than less. Let me know your
screensaver settings (Fade Screen/Timing/Fonts/etc) and what
version of the screensaver you are running (bottom left of the
screensaver setup screen) and what your operating system is, and
when the error occurs! And anything else you think might help!!
Aren't I demanding!!

INVITATIONS
===========

I hereby invite anyone to send me quotes for future inclusion in the
Quotes Screensaver! It doesn't matter how few or how many, I'll take
'em all! However if there's a real lot of them, say over 1000, then
could you please zip the file? Ta. You're a legend. If you send me
some that are included, then I'll give an official 'thank you' note as
a quote in the boat. Sorry, screensaver. I was just practising
rhythming. Is that how you spell that? I never seem to spell it
right... Oh, something else, can we please keep them clean? I like
anything that's funny, but some people draw the line at rude things,
and I don't want to offend anyone. Thanks!!

If you would like to be kept up to date with new releases (and quotes)
let me know, and I'll add you to the mailing list.

I'm particularly interested in knowing where you got this from too.
So, if you're stuck for a conversation topic other than "Hey, love
your work" then this could be it. Tell me where you got the Quote
Screensaver from!
