Basic on/off 'sparkley' animation. You may also have two frames, one with your 'sparlker' and one without.
Expanded basic on/off 'sparkley' animation. The addition of the 'blank' frames softens the effect.
Further expansion of 'sparkle' by copy and paste of frame one into frame three, now black dot flashes twice to reds once.

Playing with it some more, now the black dot pulses and the red one flashes on and off.
By alternateing posistions on different frames, you get a 'true' sparkle going. Colors/sparkles can be mixed, I left them seperated on this example for clarity.
A more advanced type of sparkle, instead of on/off the size changes. This is particleary effective with ray or starburst type sparkles.
