A NIGHT WITH LARRY :

“I put out the fire! I put out the fire!” These are the words Larry Emdur screamed while running around, pouring water over his head at one of his infamous The Price is Right after-parties. This is a far cry from the suave man that middle-aged housewives across the nation tune in to see every weeknight, a day and night behind the scenes of this unique gameshow allowed me to witness this amazing transformation.

It’s 10 pm and Larry has finished filming 10 shows in one day, “it’s easier to get the audience in for one day,” he says. After congratulating the winner of the tenth show and thanking the audience, Larry makes his way back to his dressing room and I follow. He seems very withdrawn, is he tired or is this the quiet before the storm? Larry hands me a beer and asks, “You know that feeling you get on a Friday afternoon when you’ve just finished work and you want to let loose?” “Yeah,” I replied. “Well, I’ve just done two weeks work in one day.” This really sets the scene for me, if you add Larry’s two drawn out divorces, an underpaid crew with free alcohol, half a dozen impressionable young models as well as a handful of car winners and the accounts of ‘Larry’ nights in the channel nine green room seem much more believable.

We enter the green room and the Larry allure isn’t left on the set. Every beautiful girl or crew guy we pass is left with a smile on their face and a sense of belonging. I talk to Cosi, better known as the “come on down guy”, he’s the show’s announcer. “He really makes you feel good about yourself,” Cosi explains. “He’s working harder than any of us but at the end of the day he still has the time to say hello and see how things are.” Cosi and I are interrupted by some commotion from the other side of the room. Larry has been dragged into a spa which was one of today’s prizes, by a couple of tipsy models. His $900 suit remains on whereas the models are frolicking in some skimpy bikinis. This is about where the tequila shots started… I think. I woke up at 10 am wondering why I was in the channel 7 carpark with one of the price models asleep under my arm. Upon inspecting the surrounding buildings I noticed graffiti on one of the walls. “Rob Elliot takes it up the…” It became clear how I ended up there so I quicky flagged down a taxi. After taking Lindy (the model) home I got dropped off at my house for a long sleep. I returned to work on Monday to be greeted by a basket of roses. The card read, “thanks for a great night, Larry.” It’s true what the ladies say, Larry Emdur is the most charming man on Australian television.
