Wu Jen

Background:

Once thought lost the ancient ways of the Wu jen are returning to Talinar.  Much like their Shugenja counter parts they have taken losses in both their ability to manipulate arcane power and their numbers.  Those of the ‘Blood Rage’ viewed the ancient Wu jen as their greatest advisory and have taken great steps to eliminate them.  Once loners and hermits the singular Wu jen were easily wiped out in the early years of ‘The Grand Purge’.  The remaining Wu jen saw fit to seek aid of the great clans.  The Wu jen of today are not unlike the Shugenja though their training is not regulated by the clan but by the masters who hand pick their students from the populace.  A few great and powerful Wu jen still remain as hermits in the waste with vast magical defenses and the environment as shields.  These being wield power said to rival a god though this is speculation.  None can ignore the favor shown to Wu jen by the higher powers.

Abilities:

A wu jen casts arcane spells which are drawn from the wu jen spell list (Oriental Adventures Source Book).  A wu jen must choose and prepare her spells ahead of time.  To learn, prepare, or cast a spell, the wu jen must have an Intelligence score equal to at least 10 + the spell level.  The Difficulty Class for a saving throw against a wu jen’s spell is 10 + the spell level + the wu jen’s Intelligence modifier.  Like other spellcasters, a wu jen can cast only a certain number of spells of each spell level per day.  Her base daily spell allotment is listed below.  In addition, she receives bonus spells per day if she has a high Intelligence score.  Unlike a shugenja, a wu jen may know any number of spells. She must choose and prepare her spells ahead of time by getting a good night’s sleep and spending 1 hour studying her spellbook. While studying, the wu jen decides which spells to prepare.

Spellbooks

A Wu jen spellbook is a very personal item and does not have to take the form of an ordinary spellbook.  Players are free to use optional types of spellbooks please be creative (These optional books will follow the rules given in the Complete Arcane Source Book).  For a Wu jen with clan status no matter the rank the clan more than happily will pay for any new spells the wu jen should wish to inscribe in her spellbook.  A wu jen may scribe up to 200 gp per class level for each level.  In this way the courts and rules hope to gain favor of the wu jen.

Arcane Will

A Wu jen has access to powers most cannot conceive even at early stages in training.  These powers consider each Wu jen dedicated and skilled enough to learn the basics a worthwhile investment.  They even offer small hints of advice or warning though signs so minute most would ignore them.  This grants the Wu jen an advantage she can use her ki power to gain a +4 on any imitative roll or simply re-roll the result if she chooses.  She can use this ki power a number of times per day equal to half her intelligence modifier but at least once per day.

Arcane Boon

As a gift for proceeding so far in their training all apprentice wizards are taught one secret art by their mentor.  All wu jen begin play with a bonus metamagic feat.

Scribe Scroll

All wu jen learn to scribe scrolls for both personal use and for the use of the clan.  Wu jen gains scribe scroll as a bonus feat.

Sponsorship of the Courts

Now that the wu jen have been accepted into the clans both rank and support comes to those who embrace it.  This form of sponsorship takes some of the burden off the wu jen she is free to spend any of her backing points instead of experience points when crafting items.  These points do not carry over from level to level so any points not spent are lost.

Spell Secret

At 3rd level, and every three levels thereafter, a wu jen can choose one spell known to her that then becomes permanently modified as though affected by one of the following.
