A boyhood love of art and airplanes have grown into an adult passion of recreating the world of aviation in art. Growing up in Ohio, Lawrence MacMahan spent much of his time sketching airplanes, reading history, and studying the overall dynamics of aviation. Taking some college courses in art, Lawrence believes that most of his ability is self taught. Aviation Art is a specific genre that required his focus and dedication.
Some of the significant qualities of MacMahan's work include is an incredible amount of detail. This factor demonstrates the artist's extensive knowledge of history and aviation, as well as a firm belief in historical accuracy. Another quality in MacMahan's work is one of a less tangible nature. Lawrence is driven to create a sense of reverence and awe in using an exceptional relationship of color and mood. His breathtaking skies are a product of this element. Both qualities reflect the enormous amount of respect this artist holds for the people and events he recreates.
Some of Mr. MacMahan's accomplishments include 3 limited edition lithograph prints from pencil composistions. These three prints are a series representing the history of aviation. The WACO Museum in Troy, OH displays a MacMahan print. Some original oil on canvas pieces by Lawrence MacMahan can be found on display at The Liberty Museum in Oberlin, OH, The Cargo Warehouse in Vermillion, OH, and just recntly The MAPS Air Museum in North Canton has added a MacMahan painting to their display. He has done numerous commissions for aviation enthusiasts, pilots and corporate display, worldwide. Lawrence has also painted the nose art on a restored AT-11, that won Best Bomber Award at Sun N' Fun 98.
Lawrence currently resides in Elyria, OH with his wife, Sharyn and daughter, Emily,15. When painting, Lawrence is accompanied by his painting pal, Emily. She loves getting tips from her dad. When he isn't painting, he enjoys restoring Vintage British Motorcyles. |
