Ok, so this has NOTHING at all to deal with the ren faire, but it does have everything to deal with me. One of this day's I'll make a personal page, but until then this subject is to important to me to leave it out. The great thing about the subject is we learned A LOT from the time we found out I am dyslexic. Better news is there are ways to help people with over coming their learning problems.
School was never easy for me. I started to have major problems early in my school career. But it was the early 80's and there was not much information on the subject then. I was diagnosed in my first year of 5th grade. Getting diagnosed was an interesting task to begin with. They gave me lots of different test's ranging from IQ test, I was sent to a shrink for an evaluation, and more. Finally I was given a new test and was shown to be dyslexic.
I spent half my day in normal school and the other half in a special education class at a different school. It really depends on how you look at it, but failing/doing 5th grade again was a good thing or a bad thing. It gave me time to learn to read so by end of 8th grade I was ready for high school. The bad part was that I never fit in with the new class. With having a odd class schedule I was always an outsider. Also having a problem, like being dyslexic something that I really did not understand, fitting in just never happen. Oh well that's life.
By the end of grammar school my GPA was well below 2. By the end of High School my GPA was 2.8. In 95 I got a BS in computer Information systems with a GPA of 3.26. Grammar and spelling will never be my strongest subject, but I still graduated college. I have been toying with going for my masters one day.
I'm not saying it was easy for me, and it will not be easy to learn to read for a loved one. But there is hope.
Here is a couple Links on the subject. I wish you the best.
