Ten Second Thrill Ride
(c) 2001 James Heald

Ten seconds from the gate
to the chair
Strapped in and already gone
Four seconds to 56 miles per hour
and my heartís running late
Chasing the wind blowing through my hair
Strapped in and already gone
Can you feel the crush
Can you feel the power

This dream was over in a flash:
Head held high
Your back turned to me
As my fingertips traced the contours of your spine
No oxygen was found at the bottom of the mine
And it was over in a flash
A mad minute, a mad dash
Four seconds to 56 miles per hour
I felt your blush and I felt your power

Thereís tenderness in a moment
Weakness and strength in a tear
One moment a victim
One second a hero
You are no more a victim
than I am a hero
We turned the tables on reciprocity
Cranked up the volume on terminal velocity
and in your whispered sigh I felt your power

Weíve been warned about the crash and burn
Other things that make the stomach churn
Lost and forgotten old school lessons learned
Four seconds and 56 miles per hour
A tenth of a second in the hundred yard dash
Are my shoulders strong enough to cache your tears
Are we ready for the next fifty years
In your finger on my lips I can feel your power
and Iím ready to face another life with you

Ten seconds from the chair to the exit
and my heart is beating a few seconds late
56 mph to zero in four seconds
A wake up call, back to reality
Chasing the wind is easier than chasing after you
but the wind isnít worth that much to me.
For a few seconds I felt the push and the power
And I know, I KNOW! the power and the glory
And I pray that one day you will know it, too.
