Welcome to the storyline page!! This page used to feature a few different storylines, but I've decided one is enough. Thanks to Ichi Kichi Tenshi for the info on generator research, and Generator Gawl: With Love for the Ryouko quote. (The later quotes come from when I watched the show).
WARNING: This storyline contains spoilers for the whole series.
**************************************************The storyline begins in 2007, with a girl named Masami. Her mom asks her to close the storm windows, and when she goes to do that, she sees a strange beam of light off in the distance. The scene switches to a nearby park, where we hear leaves rustling and three voices, but don't see who's talking. This, by the way, is Ryo, Kouji, and Gawl. Then some kind of fight starts, but we don't see it.
Then we go back to Masami as she gets ready for work, fighting with her mom since her mom called her in sick. It turns out there's a stalker about who stalks girls at fast-food places. Since Masami works at the local fast-food burger joint, Ohju! Burger, her mom fears for her, but Masami insists she'll be fine and takes off on her bicycle...
...just in time for the guys to see her whiz by. After wondering at the surroundings, the trio heads into town. Kouji "borrows" a newspaper from a local vendor, and finds out the date: September 2007. A little later, a very hungry Gawl wanders off in search of food. He happens by Ohju! Burger and peaks inside the front window, looking at the menu board, wishing he could have food but knowing he has no money. Ryo and Kouji, meanwhile, go looking for a port where Ryo can plug in his laptop so they can search for lodging.
Masami happens to see Gawl peeking in the window of Ohju! Burger and goes outside to confront him. Thinking he's the fast-food stalker, she calls the police, while back with Ryo and Kouji, Ryo logs into the student housing database successfully.
Ryo and Kouji then head down the street, just in time to see Gawl being arrested, and Masami yelling at the police. Gawl sees them (knocking over a policeman as he gets up), and asks them to help. Kouji does help, and even though they're taken to police HQ, Kouji concocts a viable story, saying they're orphans and the orphanage they were in burned down, so they lost everything. The policeman falls for the story, gives them soup and new identity papers, and offers to drive them to the house Ryo found.
En route to the house, Ryo asks Kouji why he told the police a make-believe story. Kouji tells him that he realized from the date on the newspaper that something didn't go right: instead of having a year to accomplish what they came to do, they now only have three months! Ryo can't believe it, but says the show must go on. Meanwhile, we see Gawl sleeping next to them, and we go into his dream, which shows the events of the night before. Gawl transforms into some huge robot to fight another huge robot. They fight, he takes care of it, and they leave.
The trio arrives at the house, which, we learn, is actually Masami's! Ryo explains their dilemma, but Masami refuses to live with "that pervert" (Gawl). Masami's mom disagrees, and says they really should help the boys. Ryo promises they'll be good tenants. "We only need your help for three months. Just three months," he cries, dropping into a bow.
Masami's mom says she could stand living with anyone for three months (she names some American stars in the dub, but I can't remember who they are). Kouji says they can move in that day if they like the place, and Masami's mom shows them in. Gawl and Masami exchange looks of disgust, but follow the others in.
The boys end up entering Oju Academy, a school for geniuses which Masami goes to. Masami is not happy about this situation (after all, she already has to deal with them at home!) but decides to live with it. The boys' advent at Oju Academy also brings into the plot the series' villains, Professor Ryouko Saito and her mysterious sidekick, Kanae, and also Masami's best friend, Natsume, all of whom figure into the story in far more prominent ways later.
As the plot continues, we learn more about the guys' plan, mostly through Ryo's flashback dreams mid-way through the series. They came from the future to stop Takuma Nekasa, a professor and scientific researcher at Oju Academy, from discovering a special cell called an "include cell." The cell, when activated in humans and animals, makes them immune to disease and able to live longer. This discovery lead to the development of a special race of humans who, with the include cell in them, were able to turn into huge robots called generators. They were used mostly for rebuilding Earth after World War III erupted in 2007. But in the future (2145 to be exact), Ryo found out that Kubere, the organization that backed the generator research, had some shady motives behind the scenes for their use. Shocked at this information, Ryo became convinced this had to be prevented. So he convinced Kouji and Gawl to go back in time with him to stop Nekasa from discovering the include cell, thus preventing the war and Kubere's abuse of the generators. The risk is high, since success in stopping Nekasa's research might make them cease to exist. But it's worth doing, they decide, so they run to the wormhole jumping device and prepare to go back to 2006, a year in advance, to talk Nekasa out of continuing his research. But when they get to the past, they realize what I said above, that they didn't get there a year ahead of time, but only three months ahead.
As if things couldn't be worse, evil generators have followed them to the past, and Gawl is the only one strong enough to fight them. So Gawl has to fight a lot of bad guys, while Kouji and Ryo cover for his absence. Masami becomes suspicious of them and tries to spy on them. And it turns out she's not the only one: Saito's been doing some spying of her own.
Meanwhile, the guys have no success in convincing Nekasa to stop his research, which he claims will lead to a huge evolutionary step for mankind, etc., etc. And Saito keeps spying and the generators keep popping up.
Finally, Saito is ready to show her real self to the guys, so she captures them (and Nekasa too, saying he served his purpose) and sends out a generator to fight them. Gawl, unfortunately, is tied to a chair at this time. Kouji and Ryo then have no choice but...to generate themselves! Even though Ryouko insists they're just "an older, inferior model" Kouji and Ryo do some real damage to the generator, and things really heat up when Gawl finally breaks his bonds and gets in on the action. The generator is destroyed, and the boys get away, but Ryouko isn't happy, especially since Kanae told her Kouji and Ryo weren't strong enough to generate. She threatens to get rid of them, then turns to a large test tube in which, curled up in a fetal position, is Natsume! Apparently, Saito made Natsume as a sort of "living camera" with which she could spy on the boys. "She will be a shame to lose," says Saito as she looks at her, "but I guess I'll always be able to make more of them. Right?"
In the last three episodes, we find out even more about the boys, Ryouko, and Natsume. In episode 10, Ryouko sends Natsume out to kill the boys, which she decides not to do because they are her friends, much to the chagrin of Ryouko when she finds out. Kanae is startled after Natsume leaves the lab by the fact that certain tubes are being kept in a special case by Ryouko, but blames his reaction on exhaustion. We find out later (in episode 12) these are eggs taken from Natsume, which were later used in the in vitro fertilization that created Ryo, Kouji, and Gawl, making Natsume their genetic mother! We also find out Natsume is a clone (most likely of Ryouko, though this is never specified). Kanae later leaves the lab and finds Nekasa, telling him their time has come.
Masami, meanwhile, is worried when the guys, who finally promised to come home after being gone for several episodes, don't come home, and even more so when Natsume doesn't come by to help her cook for them.
The boys head to Ryouko and Nekasa's labs to try to find clues of their intentions, only to find both labs totally empty. Suddenly, Kanae appears, and he warns them that the end is near. We also find out here (from Kouji's deduction when Gawl rushes at Kanae and Kanae stops him in his tracks with some impressive fighting moves) that Kanae is a generator. Kanae directs them to Nekasa's lab. There the boys find a letter from Natsume, who they subsequently try to track down. We learn from Natsume's voice-over of the letter that she knows everything about them, that she was created and raised by Ryouko to be her puppet, and that she is sacrificing herself in order to save the guys and Masami from Ryouko's plans.
The guys' tracking of Natsume ends at a cliff overlooking a forested valley. The valley is still smoldering from a recent fire. Gawl finds Natsume's pager hidden under some leaves, slightly singed. He realizes Natsume is dead. The rage and sorrow of this realization causes him to generate, despite Kouji and Ryo's pleas for him not to do so. The rage within him causes him to overload, so that nothing Kouji and Ryo could say or do will influence him. Episode 10 ends there, and then as episode 11 begins, he takes off after the evil generators which Ryouko has just sent out after him, and the rest of the series' last 2 episodes (11 and 12) deals with the climactic battles that follow.
Masami, having heard on the news of an explosion near Mount Ohju (which, unbeknownst to her, was caused by Gawl when he was fighting an evil generator), takes off on her bike in search of the guys. At one point, she almost gets crushed by an evil generator that comes down the street and crushes the police car behind her. However, a tall white generator saves her from the evil generator. Masami looks into the generator's eyes and realizes her savior is Gawl.
After Gawl defeats the generator and leaves looking for more fights, Kouji and Ryo find Masami, still stunned from what just happened. Her worried questions about Gawl's condition lead to Kouji and Ryo telling her the whole truth about them and their mission. They also tell her of Natsume's death and present Natsume's final letter as proof. The sorrow of finding out Natsume's fate brings Masami to tears. Her time of mourning is interrupted by a helicopter landing in front of the trio. Kanae gets out and tells them to come with him. Nekasa is also in the helicopter, and seems emotionally unstable.
They fly by Central Mountain (the main tower of Ohju Academy), where they see Gawl fighting Ryouko, who has also generated (she can generate into a Phase 5 generator, which makes her much more powerful than the guys). Instead of flying down at once to save Gawl, Kanae hovers for a while. During this time, Ryouko tears out Gawl's generator core, without which he can't generate, and leaves him basically for dead in a pool of generator fluid. Energy from Gawl's body resonates with energy from the Ring Tower around Ohju Academy and creates a wormhole above the city. Kanae explains that Gawl must be woken up (since he is in a dreaming unconscious state) so that he can direct his thoughts toward the wormhole. Only then can the future that the guys came to the past to prevent be prevented. Masami, Kouji, and Ryo must be the ones to wake Gawl up. Masami asks what they should do if Gawl doesn't wake up. Kanae assures her that there is someone who can wake Gawl up, and that because of this person Gawl will surely wake if they go to wake him up.
About this time, Kanae realizes the electromagnetic field being caused by Gawl's energy resonating with the Ring Tower is messing with the helicopter, so he flies away. During this interlude, Takasa goes nuts and continues to do so until Kanae calms him down. Nekasa then addresses Kanae as "Koji." Kanae smiles and says, "You remembered, Ryo." Ryo and Kouji are obviously shocked at this exchange, as is Masami. Kanae goes on to say that when Gawl fought Ryouko before, he created a wormhole which Kanae/Kouji and Nekasa/Ryo were sucked into. Both landed in Winter 1999 in Ohju. Kanae/Kouji had his memories, but Nekasa/Ryo lost his and his only memory was a little bit about the include cell and how it worked. Kanae/Kouji went undercover as Ryouko's assistant (with the name Kanae) to try to find out her plans and gain her trust. Nekasa/Ryo decided he wanted to research the include cell further and joined Oju Academy as a molecular biologist, under the name Takuma Nekasa (since he didn't know his real name, obviously). Kanae/Kouji recognized Nekasa as being Ryo as soon as he saw him, but since Nekasa/Ryo had no memories of his past and since Kanae feared Nekasa would reveal their true identities to Ryouko if he remembered them, Kanae left Nekasa alone and bided his time, waiting for the right moment to help make things right -- which is that very moment.
When the coast is clear, Kanae pilots the helicopter back to Central Mountain, dropping off Ryo, Kouji, and Masami, who rush off to help Gawl. Meanwhile, Ryouko has returned to human form and regains consciousness just as the helicopter arrives. Kanae and Nekasa (who has regained his memories in the helicopter) generate in order to keep Ryouko busy. Ryouko is up to the challenge and generates too. A fight ensues, in which Ryouko clearly has the upper hand as the stronger generator.
Meanwhile, Masami, Ryo, and Kouji rush to where Gawl is lying. Gawl, since shortly after the time Kanae mentioned he was dreaming, has been engaged in a in-dream conversation with a ghostly yet realistic-looking Natsume, who tells him not to give up his mission. Gawl then hears Masami calling his name, and Natsume encourages him to forget the past and move forward to the future, and then disappears. Gawl then awakes, and the trio tell him what he must do to save the world and prevent the unwanted future. He then proceeds to do so, and the resulting explosion takes Ryouko with it. (As for Kanae and Nekasa, we never learn their fate; they probably just disappear along with Ryouko).
Suddenly, we are back at Masami's house, in a scene almost identical to the scene from episode 1 where Masami fights with her mom. But this time, something's different. Keiko tells Masami to hurry cause the "others" are waiting for her.
The "others" are Ryo, Kouji, and Gawl, who Masami meets in a graveyard at a seemingly unmarked grave (which is clearly Natsume's, though this is not explicitly said). Masami does the usual Buddhist ritual of praying at the grave and then asks Gawl why he didn't just start everything over (which implies Natsume would still be alive). He says he likes this time and wanted to stay in it. Masami agrees and says she'll help the guys make a better world. Masami then turns around to see a large number of her classmates (who are most likely there to pay respects too).
The scene then fades into several scenes of Ohju, as the second verse, second chorus, and the end chorus of "I Want Out" (the show's opening theme song) plays and the credits roll. The credits end with a shot of the greenhouse with an audio flashback of Natsume saying something about what transcends time. The last frame says "to the marvelous future" (or something like that).
