Peter on Porter Creek trail in October 1995

Rock CandyPortions of Rock Candy are open to ATV's, and they've really torn up the trail. Porter Creek is open only to hikers, equestrians, and bikes, so it's in much better shape. Porter Creek is a blast, including some awesome rolling downhill on a soft carpet of pine needles, but it's not as grueling as Rock Candy. Still, there's a 7 mile climb at the start of Porter Creek, enough to get your legs going!Back to Western Washington's best trails. Or back to the top. |
Capitol Peak 1Ride #1 (North Rim) at Capitol Forest.. It starts out of Rock Candy.. Very ugly at the beginning but terrific the rest of the way.. took us about 3 hrs. (!4 miles or so).. there is a 3 mile climb in the middle of it that gets steeper as you get higher (its on a fire road so its a bit easier) anyways mabe for the next time you can try that if you would like.. there is some great switch backs and killer descents also.Back to Western Washington's best trails. BordeauxFrom: JamesThere is a GT downhill ride from the top of Larch Mt. That goes to Mt. Molly campground that is very challenging. You can begin at Bordeaux campground and ride up to Larch, do the loop around it (2hr.) then cruise down the downhill. You need a map from either Dept. of Forestry or Olympic Nat. Forest. The both give them out free! Back to Western Washington's best trails. Or back to the top. |
Porter CreekThe Porter Creek ride at Capitol Forest as described in Kissing the trail is quite rideable. It's also on the south (non-motorized) side of the forest. It is ridable, although there is a fairly primordial-oozy stretch at the beginning. A much easier ride as well, although not a pushover. Expect 3-4 hours or riding for about 23 miles. I recommend to do it backward, it make the climb longer but easier. Taking it backward from the book lets you see also the most beautiful part of the ride at slow speed. If you are quiet enough you might see animals in the area... As of september 01, only the base of green line, where the creek is, is barely rideable, everything else is fine. Careful when you go there, use your full sense of orientation because there have been creating new logging roads and re-routing some trails... If you want to see some picture about the area. Mima CreekFrom: Fabien PichardJune 3 1996 Capitol Forest - Mima Creek Ride #35 in Kissing the trail You can read the description down there, but don't try to ride it. They harvested a big part in that area and it is hard to find the trails now. Also the horses destroyed the path. Last time it took us 2 hours to do 4 miles. There was more hiking than biking involved. This is very bad... Do you want to see some pictures taken during the ride? (116k)Alan on Mima creek.
