| Welcome to Our LaPerm Information Page! We hope that we can help you learn more about the LaPerm Cat Breed! First we'll start with some common Questions and the answers to them! Q: Are LaPerms Hypoallergenic? A: NO. No cat is completely hypoallergenic, not even the Sphynx or other Rex breeds. Allergies are caused by cat saliva, but most often fur can cause the allergies to worsen. In this case, the LaPerm does help reduce allergies (Depending on the individual), because of it's lesser shedding coat. Q: Are the LaPerms Lesser Shedding? A: YES! LaPerms have coats much like a poodle coat. The curl tends to hold the coat in, making it a lesser shedding breed. LaPerms crossed with Persians or Himalayans will generally shed much more, since the LaPerm is not meant to be outcrossed to these breeds. Q: Do the LaPerms mat? A: NO! LaPerms are a non-matting cat, which makes life a lot easier for grooming! :) Q: What can the LaPerm cat be bred to? A: LaPerms are a fairly new breed and since the gene pool is so small, the cat registries and standard allows outcrossing to domestic short or longcoated cats, as well as a few select other Registered Breeds in certain Registries. These cats obtain Registration papers from the cat Registries and are called "Experimental Breeding Cats For The LaPerm Breeding Program" Since the LaPerm is a dominant gene, curly coated kittens can be produced from using a straight coated cat to a LaPerm. Curly Coated kittens from these breedings can be Registered as first generation purebred LaPerms and are eligable for showing as well in certain Registries. Q: What breeds should NOT be bred to the LaPerm? A: Since the LaPerm was a natural mutation that developed on a farm of regular domestic barn cats, domestics are most commonly used and prefered as breeders for the LaPerms. Cornish Rex, Selkirk Rex, Devon Rex, Any other Rex breeds, Manx, American Curl, Scottish Folds, Munchkins, Himalayans, & Persians are cats that should NOT be used to breed to a LaPerm. Q: What does BB, BC, & BS Stand for? A: BB Stands for a kitten that is Born Bald. Kittens that are born bald will develop their curls anytime between 2days old and 4 months. BC Stands for a kitten that is Born Curly. These kittens will go bald anytime from birth to 1 year of age and coats will come back in most often curlier than before.(Often with a BC coat it will become almost straight coated before going bald). BS Stands for a kitten that is Born Straight. These kittens 99.9% of the time remain straight coated, but in rare cases, can be born with curly whiskers and go bald to grow in curly coats. Q: Are Born Straight LaPerms lesser shedding too? A: NO. The Straight coated LaPerms are wonderful family pets, as they often inherit the wonderful LaPerm temperament. Unfortunately they do shed much like normal cats. Q: Can Straight Coated LaPerms produce curly coated kittens? A: NO, not likely. It is in very rare unusual cases that a straight coated LaPerm has produced a curly kitten. Q: What are the benefits of spaying & neutering for the LaPerm? A: Other than the usual reasons for altering, a LaPerm will always hold a better coat once they are altered. Unaltered Stud males generally are more stressed causing them to have coat changes more often, which means sometimes losing coat around the neck and stomach. Unaltered females are hormonal and can actually go completely bald or develop frizz if being bred or in heat. Nevertheless, it is always better to have an altered pet. Q: What colours can the LaPerm cat come in? A: All colours are acceptable in the LaPerm breed! :) Any other questions that you have about the LaPerm are welcome!
