Do gardeners have to think about safety problems?

Sure they do. Power tools like lawn mowers, leaf blowers, or electric hedge clippers make a gardener’s job easier, but they’re very noisy. I have to wear earplugs or safety earmuffs to protect my ears.

Because I work in the sun, I wear a hat. I usually wear a long-sleeved shirt and long pants to protect my skin from thorns and hedges. I always wear work gloves when I’m planting or weeding. Another reason to keep my skin covered is that sometimes I work with hazardous materials, like pesticides.

Safety is important in gardening, and in most jobs.

Apartments

Ann: Hi! Do you still need an apartment?

My neighbor is moving out.

Sara: Yes, I do. How big is it?

Ann: It has two bedrooms and two bathrooms.

There’s a garage and a security system.

Sara: What floor is it on?

Ann: It’s on the fourth floor. All the tenants are nice, quiet people.

Sara: Sounds perfect. Do you know how much the rent is?

Ann: No. But you can call the manager. He just put up the vacancy sign this morning. Here’s the number.

S ara: Thanks.

Dear Mr. Fanler:

I left a phone message, but you haven’t called back. I am your new tenant and I have some problems in my apartment.

1. The bathroom sink faucet is dripping, so I need a plumber.

2. The door chain on the front door is broken, and there is no peephole. I have to unlock the deadbolt to see who is at the door. Can you send a repair person?

3. The windows in the bedroom are painted shut, and the air conditioner is not working. Summer is coming and the apartment is very hot. Would you please call an electrician?
