| The United Nations has shown itself once again to be nothing more then a debating society- and that may indeed be stretching it. First and foremost there is NO world organization that can be taken seriously that would let a country such as Libya chair a committee on human rights or countries such as Iran and Iraq chair the committees on disarmament. The United Nations has also failed in their attempts at diplomacy in the case of this war between coalition forces and Iraq. A country such as France should be ashamed of itself. If it was NOT going to take the necessary actions to back up resolution 1441 then it never should have signed that resolution. The fact of the matter is that France was NOT going to listen to ANY resolution that required the use of force. After all, they had previously stated that they would use their veto on the British proposal even BEFORE Iraq had a chance to respond to it. Now we are told that they will veto humanitarian aid if it is not paid for entirely by the Allied forces but they want a hand in the rebuilding of Iraq. The fact that we have heard that Saddam has stated he was destroying missiles and has had chemical weapons since the Gulf War ended, but has not destroyed them at this point, is disturbing enough. Aren't these the same missiles and weapons that he has spent the last twelve years stating that he NEVER had? Diplomacy works ONLY when there is a viable level of give and take on all sides. Iraq was ordered by the U.N. to destroy ALL WMD after the last Gulf War and has NOT done so. In fact, the first few days of the war proved this with the fact that a resolution previously passed stated that Iraq was supposed to have destroyed all Scud Missiles, yet the first strikes on Kwait were from Iraqi Scuds. This alone should prove that the Butcher of Baghdad has indeed been lying to the world for the last twelve years. Resolution 1441 was signed by ALL members of the Security Council and was UNANIMOUSLY passed. But now, when Saddam ignored the resolution, the U.N. REFUSED to back up what they said Saddam must do. Countries such as France and Germany and Russia HELPED to bring on this war. Had they stood firmly behind resolution 1441 then we may never have reached this position that we are in today. The bottom line is that the U.N. has FAILED and the blood of the people in this conflict will sit squarely on their shoulders. |
