Each Cirque show has its own character and one of the first things I noticed about La Nouba that set it apart from its more grandiose sisters in Sin City is the intimacy of the theater. You almost feel like you can reach out and touch the stage. We sat in relativity the same locations in all three shows and I just couldnt get over the apparent closeness of the stage in Orlando. True, it was a smaller auditorium but it was by no means small. The closeness of the performers gave La Nouba a more personal feeling. Almost like being apart of the show. In Mystere you get a feeling of a large expanse of space with lots of things going on at once which adds to excitement but subtracts from the intimacy. In O your perspective is one of complete detachment. It is just so otherworldly you feel as if you are eavesdropping on another universe. A wonderful experience, but certainly not one of intimacy The circus acts of all three shows are similar and all quite remarkable. The scale is larger in the Vegas shows but that doesnt necessarily make them better. Of course O has the added effect of the water stage which I found completely amazing. I will never forget the sight of a 40-foot swan dive into water that appeared to be just ankle deep only seconds before. Other differences? Neither La Nouba nor Mystere take themselves all that seriously while O has almost a religious quality to it. There are several belly laughs to be had with both La Nouba and Mystere but not O. There are clowns in O but they seem more tragic than comedic. I dont believe I actually laughed during O but I did cry; not because of tragedy but because of the almost painful beauty. The music in all three shows, composed by Benoit Jutras and performed live by talented musicians is a big part of the show. If you enjoy the show (and you almost surly will) you will want to purchase the CD. The music of all three shows is unique but similar. Sort of a blend of New Age, Trance, and Pop. La Nouba features a contra-tenor, something quite unique in modern music and O has a definite World-Music sound but anyone who has heard Cirque Music before would immediately recognize the sound. By the way, dont try to figure out the lyrics. They are in no earthly language on purpose. So which show is the best? Well I still liked O better that the rest. It may just be my taste for the weird but I was so mesmerized by its otherworldliness that I was a bit worried that I had been possessed. Mystere is much bigger than La Nouba, which made it more exciting -- especially the finale. Still I really liked the intimacy at La Nouba and I believe I prefer its music to Mysteres so I would have to give it a slight edge over its larger and louder Las Vegas counterpart. So there you have it O followed by La Nouba, closely followed by Mystere. All three fantastic shows and all three worthy of a trip across the country.
