The Lanning Sisters' Gospel Band formed in September of 1997 in Denton, NC with Cherri Lanning-Tipton, Terri Lanning-Cook, (who are really sisters), "Mamma Jo" Covington, and Jimmy Miller (who are mother and son-on-law).
Mamma Jo, who was 81 in June of 2002, has several hobbies. She loves playing the doghouse bass and parrasailing....700 feet up in the air behind a boat! She is also very talented with a crochet needle and makes earrings and broaches for the girls, called "fludder-byes".
Brother Jimmy can do anything with a D-35 Martin guitar and has a gift of praying for others. He is married to Mama Jo's daughter Pamela and they have five children. All of the children have attended Christian schools and four of the five have gone on to Christian college (specifically Tennessee Temple in Chattanooga). The youngest child is still at home.
Cherri sings lead and plays percussion with a pair of tablespoons, shakers, washboard, or whatever she can find to play! She is married to Buddy Tipton, who runs the sound for the group. Cherri does not talk much on stage except to tease her sister. That seems to be one of her hobbies although other hobbies include taking care of any animal she happens to find and going shopping.
Terri sings harmony and plays the rhythm guitar. Once in a while she will throw in some percussion with sticks. The group likes to call her the "mouth of the south" because she does most of the talking. She is married to Randy Cook, who also helps with the sound equipment. They enjoy fishing and hunting together.
In 1998, at age 19, Clark Adams joined the group bringing with him a rounding of musical talent. Clark, who was 23 in August of 2002, plays a piano, mandolin, banjo-mandolin, and guitar and is a graduate student at the University of Carolina at Greensboro. His hobbies are varied but music is his real talent. He and Terri produce new material for the group--she writing the lyrics and basic tune while Clark does all of the musical arrangements.
All born again Christians, it is our prayer that our singing will bring people to the Lord and encourage a closer walk with our Savior, Jesus Christ.
"Blessed be the Lord who daily loadeth us with benefits, even the God of our salvation. Selah" Psalms 68:19 |
