Prologue:
It was the sounds of fighting
that drew her in, even though she already knew what she’d see upon breaking
into the clearing. Although she had not utilized it for some time the
Sire/Childe bond was always present and entitled her to knowing when any of her
Childer were in danger.
When Darla had turned her she
had never envisioned creating Childer herself. But her first sight of Angelus
had served to change her mind. She’d wanted the male, she’d driven him insane
and only after he was mad from her version of love had she turned him.
Unfortunately caring for an
insane Angelus had taken time away from Darla which her sire hated. So with
that thought she had sought out someone to care for Angelus when she couldn’t.
So she’d taken Angelus out,
allowed him to pick his companion and had turned the chosen female.
Penn had been the only other
vampire that she’d made; with a frown Dru realized that out of her three
childer only Buffy was not insane.
But since she only had three Childer, two of which were supposed dead, she had
assumed Penn had blown into town.
Obviously she was wrong in
thinking that… because as she cleared the wooded area she could clearly see her
Slayer involved in battle with Angelus.
An
extremely pissed of Angelus.
And if Angelus was alive did
that mean that Buffy was as well?
With narrowed eyes she
watched the fight, both males were silent. No trademark quips were falling from
William’s lips and that caused her frown to deepen. A silent William was an
angry William.
When upset the Slayer kept
all his emotions on the inside, and normally it took some prodding in order to
get him to even slightly reveal whatever the problem might be.
The two men were evenly
matched Dru decided, if she were leap into the fray it would tilt the battle in
William’s favor… between the two of them they would be able to beat Angelus
into the ground and dust him.
A fact that
did not sit very well. Even though
she had her soul and Angelus could only be called her enemy she still didn’t
want to see him dusted. She didn’t want to see any of her childer dusted.
They were her legacy. Even
after she was gone she would live on through her childer and their childer. It
was like having her own small, intimate family… except
they were vampires.
Although it looked as if
William might take the choice of leaving the male vampire alive away from her.
The Slayer, intent in his
fury on ridding the Earth of this particular vampire had backed Angelus into a
corner. The other male had no where to go, no where to turn and Dru decided
that it was high time that she showed herself.
“William,” she called. The
Slayer did not even acknowledge her presence although Angelus did, his smile
growing on his face as he renewed his fighting with vigor. Though
it didn’t make a difference. Even as the smile grew on Angelus’ face
William had pulled a stake from somewhere on his body.
Dru froze, a heart that
hadn’t beat in what seamed like forever leaping into her throat.
“Will stop,” she yelled even as
she saw the stake moving in slow motion into Angelus’ heart.
In the space of a
micro-second the male looked down at the stake in shock. His hands moving up as
if he was going to try and yank it from his chest and then finally his eyes
rose to meet Dru’s.
Alarm etched into every
facial muscle.
He murmured one word before
he blew apart into the finest of dust particles
“Buffy.”
