British MPs take up the Languages Challenge

As part of a European Year of Languages initiative, 22 MPs have committed to learn a new language with Linguaphone.

The MPs immediately committed to learn or improve their language skills at a briefing at the House of Commons, to launch Linguaphone’s contribution to the European Year of Languages. More MPs are expected to follow suit.

The briefing, hosted by Keith Vaz, Minister for Europe, announced the results of a new survey commissioned by Linguaphone, on MPs language skills. The survey found that the majority of MPs do not have sufficient language skills to really benefit their work. In response, Linguaphone committed itself to providing one of its courses to any MP or Minister willing to learn a new language. Courses are available on, CD-ROM, video, CD and online.

MPs and Ministers who have agreed to learn a language include the following:

Keith Vaz, Minister for Europe - French
Ann Taylor, Chief Whip - French
Kevin McNamara, MP for Kingston upon Hull - Irish
Richard Allan, MP for Sheffield Hallam - Greek
Rt. Hon. Terry Davis, MP for Birmingham Hodge Hill - Russian

The survey entitled ‘MPs’ attitudes towards foreign languages’ was commissioned by Linguaphone as part of its contribution to the European Year of Languages, a EU and Council of Europe initiative which is running throughout 2001.

Speaking at the event to launch yesterday’s survey, Keith Vaz said: "If we are to communicate effectively with our European partners we all need to adopt a more proactive attitude toward language learning. I applaud this initiative from Linguaphone and urge my colleagues in Parliament to follow the example set today and take up the Language Challenge laid down to them."

Peter Jamieson, CEO of the Linguaphone Group added: "The survey showed that MPs generally agree that cultural and commercial relationships are enhanced by communicating even briefly in the language of the other. I am happy that Linguaphone, by way of celebrating its centenary, can provide some assistance to them."
