Videodrone,
Rob Zombie, and
Korn in Tucson, Arizona at the Tucson Convention Center- tour kickoff... It was cool to see that Tucson sold out the TCC for
KoRn, especially since it was the tour opener- yayy! And how odd that now
Rob was opening for them, when way back when it was
KoRn opening for the band that opened for
Rob's band! And to add weirdness to that, how interesting was it that I was now seeing
Rob and
KoRn with the girl that Matt had wanted to cheat on me with? Weird stuff! ;) Videodrone sucked audibly, they just reeked. Before
Rob came on, I amused myself by insulting people bigger and badder than me who pissed me off and depended on Veronika to back me up in case they got pissed off. Hey, I was waiting for
ZOMBIE! "And out of the darkness the zombie did crawl..." OOMMGG, I get goosebumps to this day! He had like a castle backdrop, gogo dancers, flames, and robots! Yesssss! For true entertainment, set-wise, Rob can't be beat. But it's no secret he's such a stud to me- the man sings, writes, directs, designs, draws... *le sigh* I got the same "oneness" with the crowd that I did with
WZ, even if I didn't have
Rob's CD at the time. And when he started playing
WZ songs, I wept with joy. Seriously. Songs I never thought I'd hear again live, they were being played and I was moved to tears. I'd grab Veronika's arm and go, "OMG, I can't believe he's playing this!!!" After
RZ, I had to buy a shirt (I didn't have enough for the shirt I really wanted because I had bought BNL's "MYSD" before the show) and voila, I now have a Living Dead Girl shirt I adore. :)
Korn finally came on, blah. I think Jon played the bagpipes, but it was overshadowed my music I no longer really liked (I like the first CD the best by far) and this $lut on the balcony above the stage. She acted like she needed to get laid, and we could see that from standing way in the back of general admission. To this day, I still repeat what I said at the concert. I'll say, "!@#$
KoRn," and Veronika will say, "!@#$ you!" :) I think I have a review of that night somewhere around here.
Nerf Herder and
the Hippos in Tucson, Arizona at Skrappy's downtown... I went for
Nerf Herder (they did OK, I just went because I had a standing record of seeing them at every Tucson show the came to), but MAN,
the Hippos blew me away with their synth pop ska! Yow! I really, really like
the Hippos and I think you should go out and see 'em if they're in your area! I bought their CD, a girly tee (which is too #$#%in' small), some stickers, etc etc. I really expected them to suck and was gonna leave after
NH, but I'm glad I stayed!!!
Nerf Herder and the Vandals in Tucson, Arizona... So Veronika and I were gonna meet Isaac downtown for the show. I go to pull over and let Veronika out and I get hit by a cop heading home. He calls a cop friend down so he doesn't get cited for not having car insurance and gets him to cite me. Boy, was my night ruined. I eventually settled with him (the day BEFORE the compromise was due) and got no points taken off my record, but I don't like TPD now and my car insurance still reflects the booboo. Hey, it was MY fault the cop wasn't watching the goshdarn road, hmm? So anyway, I get to see like 1.5 songs by
NH and they're done. WAHHH! Then the Vandals come on (my brother had seen them with Offspring and said they sucked), and I didn't think they were too bad. But Isaac didn't like them so we left. Eh. BAD night.
Matthew Sweet in Omaha, Nebraska in front of the sand volleyball court at the Ranch Bowl... Some Pearl Spammy band that was popular around Omaha opened for him, so that sucked. But this show was outside, the wind had finally died down, and
Matthew played beautifully for me the night before I was going back to Tucson. Gotta love seeing a native boy in his and your native land. :)
GWAR on Mother's Day in Tucson, Arizona at the Rialto for the Ragnarok tour... Well, it's a
GWAR show, what do you expect? Many funny jokes, many more bad jokes, and a thoroughly unneeded abortion/coathanger suggestion. Overall, it was a fun time and I managed to not get on stage (which would be a bad thing.) I still haved a stain on one of my bras from
GWAR "blood," whoot whoo, and I used to have a Mother's Day card signed by 3 members of
GWAR at a signing earlier in the day!! The guy who "plays" Oderous came walking by Matt and I, exclaiming that he had a hangover and was drinking nasty non-alcoholic beer... and somehow, vodka was broken out and Oderous was giving any mother with kids alcohol... He was also answering the Zia Record Store phone with, "Willie Nelson?! We don't sell that $#!t" and "Buy buy buy!! Sell sell sell!" They certainly have one heckuava sense of humour, that band. ;) I think their CDs suck, but the shows are fun. :) Also, their
Bio Page, while not for the easily offended, is a SCREAM!
The Squirrel Nut Zippers in Tucson, Arizona at the Rialto... Back when swing was in, tickets to
the SNZ were hard to come by (the show sold out so fast in previous years it'd make your head spin), but not this time. There weren't a lot of people period, and even less that were passionate about or even knew
SNZ's music. But Mom and I enjoyed the show (there was a Monica Lewinsky dead ringer behind us), and Katharine's voice was beautiful!!!
Powerman5000, Unwritten Law, a few other bands in Tucson, Arizona at the Rock... I was DESTINED to get tickets to this show, especially for $9.21 a ticket. I went with a dude I knew from work (Mike), and
PM5K did a great job. The cute
PM5K shirts were sold out, so I got an Unwritten Law tiny tee (which I have since hocked- hello, I can't fit into these, I need to stop buying them!) Plus I got a compliment on my Sunnydale HS shirt- a little "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" reference for those of you not in the know. :) My
PM5K promo poster is now hanging on my wall... gotta love free stuff!
Powerman5000 and
Static-X in Tucson, Arizona at the Rialto... After seeing
PM5K once, I decided to go see 'em again- a killer bill with
Static-X, one of my fave hard dance bands! I couldn't believe the dudes in
S-X could hit those notes, and true to form, Wayne had his hair sticking wayyy straight up into the air. Rock NO! It was definately a good show.
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in Phoenix, Arizona at Desert Sky Pavilion for the Dogs With Wings Tour... To my left, I had some wench hitting on my undivorced-at-the-time Dad, to my right were drunk idiots (why were they still serving them alcohol!?), in front of me was some guy's date who knew like THREE SONGS, and behind me were weed-smokers. This whole concert experience taught me a few lessons. I called 2 minutes before Ticketmaster tickets for this show went on sale, then didn't get through to another person until more than two hours had passed. Lesson 1: Phoning into Ticketmaster sucks. Our seats were almost on the LAWN. One row away I think, actually. Then, once I realized the mofos around me were absolute, well, mofos, I realized another lesson. Lesson 2: If you aren't with the fans and people who are there for the music, it's almost not worth going, and it's certainly enough to give me pause so I can ponder whether or not it's actually worth it to go. People may b!tc# at me about being stuck up about tickets, but I've sat in the back enough to know that it SUCKS. Was the music great? Hell yeah! When everyone, even Miss I-Know-Three-Songs, got up and sang "Americal Girl," that RULED! Another "at one with the crowd" moment. Unfortunately, the drug references, actual drugs, actual alcohol and actual selfish idiots made this concert a downer in the non-music area.
Lollapalooza 1996 with Metallica and Soundgarden at some racetrack south of Phoenix, Arizona.... I spent the whole day and night trying to get Matt to pay attention to me. Uh huh. Funny thing is, the only time he cared about my attention was when I wasn't paying attention to him. Can I help it that
Devo was a heckuva lot more interesting that I thought they'd be?! ;) I'm MAD I missed most of the Ramones because Matt wanted to see if he had won some Metallica backstage pass or something. Stupid me, I ought to have just stayed right where I was, or hung out with my Dad and brother. The Screaming Trees were pretty cool too. I wanted to check out Sponge and Soul Coughing on the Second Stage (we caught the Melvins though), but there was a big sand storm that blew up outta nowhere and they closed the Second Stage down.:(
Devo was on after that, and I was just like, "!@#$
Devo, their time is up," but they were really cool!! Soundgarden stunk, but I never have liked them. They apparently did some Doors covers, according to my brother and Dad, and seeing as how I HATE the Doors, well... Metallica did a good job, opening with "So What," which we figured they'd do first. I was almost disappointed they were so predictable, but I guess it's the equivalent of the Maroon poem on BNL's Maroon tour- you just can't WAIT to hear it to start the show! On the way home, I was falling asleep at the wheel. The only other time I've done that is driving from Las Vegas to Kingman, Arizona.
KZZP Jingle Ball with BNL, SoulDecision,
Spermical Horizon, etc. in Phoenix, Arizona on December 15 or 16th, 2000 in the Celebrity Theatre... fourth row, about ten feet from the band, and the band was on a spinning stage- mmm. I took
many, many pictures, especially of Kevin Hearn. The stage was neat in that it enabled me to take many pictures of the band at various places, especially of Kevin Hearn's back, then left side, then front, then right side. I have many pics up at WCFK. ;) I went with Gus, who needs to go to more BNL shows, and met a cool dude named John there, who I've seen at 3 out of 4 BNL shows I've been to. :) Being able to be that close to the band... what a DREAM!! Plus I got "Conventioneers" sung to me- gotta love it!! ;) And did I mention... I got Kev's setlist?? *swoon*
BNL in Portland, Oregon at the Rose Garden on Oct 13, 2000- Erik and I were 5th row from the back wall of the venue (GRR GRR GRR), and had some coke-snorting fiends in front of us who talked through the WHOLE concert except for the "Stunt" songs, but it was my first BNL show and we got into the meet and greet despite not having won the contest to get in! ;)
BNL in Las Vegas at the Mandalay Bay Events Center on March 11, 2001- I went with Meg, and after a horriffic trip up to Vegas (we seriously thought we'd miss the show- we got there 4 minutes before Chantal started), we got to see Steve sing so passionately all his facial muscles were straining, plus some !@#$ fine Steve pelvis thrusts. The encore was "Careless Whisper" with Chantal and her band (might I add they were excellent), and afterwards we met some Barenaked.net people (and I saw John again- when he was on the Jumbotron for "Eddie and the Chefs," I grabbed Meg and yelled, "I know him" over and over again) and later got souvenieer set lists! Whoot whoo!
BNL in Phoenix, Arizona at Desert Sky Pavilion on March 13, 2001- Not only was Meg here, but Ohio was also representin' with Sandi and Anna! We also saw peeps from the Vegas show like John, the two dudes sitting next to us in Vegas (who also sat next to us in Phx), Hydee and her friend were there, and my friend Paula and her man were there! It rocked!! The show was cool, the rap about "bird $#!t-covered benches" on Mill Avenue was spot-on (too bad the Cold Stone guy didn't remember Ed from the day before, and believe me, I interrogated him!) and I hope a good time was had by all! :) Sandi even got "thanks" and thumbs-up from the band for her cool poster! Rock NO!
The Club Crawl in Tucson, Arizona all over downtown... the Zsa Zsas were funny and cool (they spoke with unidentifable Eastern European accents and remade songs with their own twist), and
Hector on Stilts blew me away... they totally reminded me of the Traveling Wilburys... yeah!! They also played at Stacy's wedding, is that cool or what?! Rock NO! And did I mention... they're HOTTT?!
Barenaked Ladies in Albuquerque, around July, 2001. I loved meeting everyone, getting liquor early Sunday morning illegally, and chilling with Joy and her hubby. Thanks to this show, I met Megan and Lisa, as well as Sandra, three of the probably six or seven BNL fans in Arizona.
Barenaked Ladies at the Gorge in Washington, mid-to-late August. Wind, wind, and smoke from wildfires. I got some great pictures at the Gorge, but sadly, the very people I wanted to meet up with... didn't really care about meeting up with me. What's the point of going to a BNL concert without meeting up and having fun with fellow fans?! Plus an under 300 mile trip took about 6 hours driving... wind, ugh.
Dwight Yoakam, finally, a full ten years after I began loving his music. Ohhhh yes, standing front row at the Rockin' Rodeo. Ohhh yes, having him look at me while singing "Little Sister" and doing his little dances and thrusts. Heaven on Earth. Unfortunately, the five hours I waited, alone, before Dwight came on disturbed me and caused me to make some life decisions. Still, seeing a twinkle in Dwight's eyes and a smile on his lips, while getting crushed by his middle-aged groupies... 'twas a
wild ride indeed.
Weezer and AM Radio at the Anselmo Valencia Tori Amphitheater (AVA for short) at the end of May, 2002. See, I got my tenth row ticket, psyched because Pete Yorn was playing on this tour. Well, in his infinite wisdom, he decided to drop off the friggin' tour and star his own. Normally I wouldn't have a problem with that. BUT. His last date with Weezer was... the show before ours. I was PISSED. $40 for a band I'd already seen (Weezer) and wasn't that hyped about?! As it turns out, Weezer is a class act. They're adorable in concert, and they seriously rock harder than I could ever conceive. If you're even slightly interested in the band, go see 'em! It's worth your while.
Pete Yorn, on the other hand, 0wns on CD, but doesn't come close to matching the CD sound in person. I do love the effects and electronic bits on the album
musicforthemorningafter, but Pete was just bone tired and it showed. I think he could have rocked harder, had the road not been getting to him, but it was a delight to see him in person, since I love his music so much. He was so rock and roll he was sweating it out in the heat of the night.
Guster and
John Mayer at the Mesa Amphitheater. Couldn't find the goddamned venue, couldn't find a goddamned parking spot... missed most of Guster's set. GRR. Seriously one of the worst venues in terms of finding it. It's very nice, but a bitch and a half to get to. (Even people who have lived in Phoenix 5+ years couldn't tell me where it was!) But John Mayer was real bluesy, just great in concert. I wouldn't hesitate to see Guster or John Mayer again in concert.
Concerts I've missed- I had heard of
BNL before 1996, but missed one or three chances to see them way before "Stunt." I even managed to miss a Stunt tour show in Mesa because my car was craptacular and couldn't take me up there. :( I missed seeing
Green Day right when "Dookie" was just coming out- Billie Joe almost had to kick the ass of some heckler at that show! I missed seeing
oZomatli the night before they played with Santana- I KNEW
oZo was playing but I was like, "Enh, Club Congress $ucks."
