August 9, 2004 - One of the traits I find most endearing about the children I work with at Cassidy Elementary School is that they are curious and like to learn. This especially applies to foreign people, places and things. I think epals is a great program to help kids learn about technology, the world and how to be good friends. Through exchanging letters with our friends, we learn about Australians, Americans and Japanese. I am trying to give this class an opportunity to use technology to bring the world to our town.

In a recent email, a student from Australia wrote "Dear...sorry I did not write last
week. Our car ran over my foot, then I got sick, then my cat died. But I am better now." Tough week!

I feel one of the positive things I can do is to be an english conversation partner for the students. Filipinos study english and are quite good at it, but shy about speaking. My grade 3 classmates Sherrie and Nadia check all my assignments from my Speak Tagalog book and do the translations easily. I just try to be around so they can talk to me. I stay after school to play Connect Four or read. They speak english to me, I reply in bad Tagalog.

Sometimes, they say gems like this, "Kuya Lane, you said we were going to play soccer, now you are playing
with the boys, you are a liar!" That's pretty good.

Teachers tell them to not to tease me. I see a few scold the others. But it is fun to see them as they are. They enjoy teasing and its just how children are. I can tease back just as good as any tease me. I call the girls "pikat" (flirty), not what good Filipino girls are supposed to be.

One day, my student Gladys said, "Kuya Lane, I will go your house on Saturday. I will see your room." It is just like yours I said. The report from others who have been to our house  is that my room is messy. Maybe it is. I cleaned my room before they came this time.
I can tell which boys play computer games like Counterstrike (a 3D kill terrorist game) because they can use the keyboard. The girls don't have this natural advantage. So when girls visit me, I try to introduce them to computer games or Playstation. I am not a fan of computer games, but I see the advantages as far outweighing the disadvantages. Guada and Gladys were the only girls at the internet cafe the day we went. We played Counterstrike with the other people there. We got killed a lot.
