December 21, 2003 - Imagine puppies, sniffing around at everything and you now have a good idea of what happens when a group of 4th graders comes over to visit. One day, some kids just showed up at my house. They wanted to see my room and once inside proceeded to touch everything. The next day, they brought different classmates. Then the next day, again. What can I do? It is a novel experience.

I was invited by my 6th grade class to their Christmas party. I mentioned this to my friend and asked if I should bring anything special.
She told me ice cream would probably be appreciated. So I brought ice cream to the party. Now I know that if I need to win the hearts of Filipino 6th graders, ice cream is the way to do it. To say they really enjoyed it is an understatement.

It is a nice feeling to be so well treated by children. I think of them as my friends and I enjoy spending time with them.
The LGU Christmas party was an 8 hour marathon. Thankfully, I had my Joanna, Bettina and Catherine to keep me company in the bleachers. Imee Marcos paid a visit to the party and got a standing ovation from the crowd! Everyone wanted her picture and I sent Catherine into the crowd to get this picture. I don't know much about politics here. I do know a little about the infamous rule of Ferdinand Marcos. The people love Imee Marcos.

Contrast her welcome with that of F. Sionil Jose, the
Philippine National Artist who visited Carigara last April. He talked to a group of about 40, most of whom were attending a workshop on arts. I did not know what he wrote at the time. But I have now read a few of his books such as Mass, Three Filipino Woman and Ben Singkol. It is very interesting reading. He is mentioned as a possible Nobel Prize recipient for literature. I have 3 more books to cover his epic Roasales saga.
If I were to meet F.Sionil Jose in person, I would be really excited. He is trying to get a message out about Filipino nationalism and pride. But only a handfull of people came to see him. Imee Marcos gets a standing ovation. Hmmm...
