October 15, 2003 - The scene to your right might be the most common position to see a Filipino in, head down holding a cellphone. Cellphones are wildly popular in the Philippines and text messaging is hot. The user can send a text message for 1 peso ($.02). The Philippines has the highest volume of text messages sent per day. In the world.
Recent figures for subscribers are 10 million to Smart (PLDT)and 7 million for Globe (Ayala). The growth outlooks for both of these companies are very good.
I have a Nokia 3315 model cell phone. It is good enough. There are some great cell phones available here, probably better than what is available in America because of the funny US telecom regulations. If I was rich, I would get a camera phone.

Epals in Carigara is going well and now covers 4 classes at Cassidy and 2 classes at Holy Cross. We have responses and the kids go crazy when they get them. They mention that they read their letter every day!

I have been suspended from riding my mountain bike in the rural barangays. My host mother fears for my life. A resident of a barangay was picked up by the Police because of his NPA connections. From what I can understand, the family thinks it is me who informed the police. That is ludicrous. But, because this is their place and not mine, I am reduced to riding my bike in my neighborhood only. All a part of the experience...
October 29, 2003 - I am in Makati, a nice part of Manila. After 6 months in the field, the 40 volunteers from group 261 gathered at the University of the Philippines, Los Banos for a week of fun. It was nice to see everyone listen to their stories. Some have really neat living arrangements like Nipa Huts, Haciendas or homes with house help. I had a nice time at UPLB. There was a beautiful field to go running around with lots of young Filipinos and the campus was nice.
It was my frist trip away from site and I had a great time.  From there, I traveled to Manila. The wealth of the capital city is high compared to my town.

I went to the Glorietta mall, also known as Ayala Center. It is the nicest shopping mall I have ever been in.  Next to Glorietta is Greenbelt center. There are stylish restaurants, movie theaters, discos and of course, Starbucks.
I spent some time sitting at Starbucks and I decided that people around Greenbelt are some of the most beautiful people I've ever seen. They have style.
