September 3, 2005 - AFS Thailand is a great organization. The students for 2006 were just selected. From 11,000 applicatants, 2000 students will have the chance to study abroad for a year. I am impressed by the willingness of Thai students to live and learn in a different country. To understand them, you must understand their desire to be "inter" - slang for international. To be cool and hip in Thailand - and especially in Bangkok - you want to be international.
That means learning other languages, traveling to other countries and knowing about J-pop, Korean movies (really popular here - like My Sassy Girl and The Classic) and asian superstars like Rain (Korean).

AFS Thailand organized an orientation for the new batch and brought in AFS representatives from all over the world - from France, the Netherlands, Peru, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Malaysia, Indonesia, Iceland, Spain, China, Japan! So many places to go!
AFS brought us to Bangkok to see the event. I really enjoyed meeting people from so many countries.

Back at SBW, we celebrated sports day. I had never seen anything like it before. There were running events, tug-of-war and football (soccer for you Americans). Everyone was more concerned with...
...cheering! The school was divided into 4 teams by colors. Each color had to make a cheering section with dances and for a parade. I watched my students cheer all day long! I don't know what they were yelling, but it was loud and still rings in my ears. You might think Thai people are quiet, but if you saw the students of SBW cheering, you would not believe it. If you saw them in class with me, they are noisy then too!

The students had a lot of fun - mainly making noise as I don't think they paid much attention to the sport games.
We were all glad to be free from classes for a few days! I liked talking to my students outside of class. In class, they all wear uniforms and have rules to follow. The boys and girls even have haircut rules, as you can see. They are all young people and have their own personalities and styles. Seeing them outside of class gave me a better idea of their personalities. I am still working on learning all their names though...
