August 21, 2005 - Last week had a national holiday to celebrate the Queen's Birthday, also celebrated as Thai Mothers' Day. For Mothers' Day, James got his mom some flowers.

Teaching at Saraburiwitthaykhom continues to be interesting. One reason I have not been to graduate school is because I think I learn more from doing things than reading about them. I like to believe I can teach myself to do most anything.
In my time here, I have been learning to be an ESL teacher. I don't have qualifications on paper, but I am doing the job and learning as I go.

I believe that the job of a teacher is to serve as a guide to learning, not a deliever of knowledge. I am trying to expose students to different ideas through projects. I believe that people learn by doing, not by having someone tell them anything.
I try make everything I do in class active. I would rather see my students doing something than have me talk. I have been using a lot of music in class, sort of like karaoke. Students can sure sing in english if it is a song they are interested in!

I also believe that school work should be relevant and useful to the modern world. Epals is a great program to me because email is such a big part of the way communcation takes place today.

I have watched my students work on computers and I noticed that a lot of them are proficient. I think a great skill to learn is creating a web page. It can also be a fun way to practice english. In grade 9, we are creating individual web pages. Their first assignment was to write their life philosophy. I was impressed with their writing and designs. I am also creating a site so I can assign work to them. You can see that site here:

Here are a few links so you can see some of their work:
