May 2005 - The legendary UP Mountaineers are a group of fun-loving nature-lovers based out of UP Diliman in Quezon City, Manila. Each summer, they hold a few "open climbs" - meaning that non-members who are interested in going on an outing are invited to join. They call these climbs "talikasan" or "making love with nature". Filipino sense of humor.

Lucky for me, I have friends from UP-Diliman and was informed about these climbs. I joined the UP Mountaineers on their climb of Mt. Daguldol in Batangas. It was a great experience, one of the
most fun-filled times in the Philippines. I really enjoyed meeting the people, such a nice group to be with. Up above in the orange cap is Dennis, our fearless leader.

I always get a kick out of doing things with Filipinos, because they have quirky ways. Halfway up the mountain is a little sari-sari store (like a neighborhood 7-11). So, we all plop down for a rest and a big drink of mountain dew. Not coconut juice, which is much healthier and cheaper, but bottled mountain dew which must have come up the mountain on someone's back. But everyone seemed to enjoy the soda.
Cooking and eating with my friends was great fun. Below are 2 of my groupmates cooking dinner. We ate pretty luxuriously, grilled kebobs with fresh vegetables and chicken. I never ate so good as a boy scout. And definitely not so well when I go backpacking and my fare is oats and rice to save on weight. Filipinos really make an effort to eat well, even if the food has to be carried up a mountain on your back.

The last picture is of our filipino breakfast - fried dried fish, sliced meat, rice and milo (a hot chocolate like substance). I realized while eating the fried fish with vinegar and rice how much I am going to miss filipino food. I will have to figure out how to get a fix of it wherever I am.
The people I met from the UP Mountaineers were friendly, environmentally conscious, fun to be with and very smart. I am glad to have made new friends with the UP Mountaineers.
