| The Jayhawks with Wilco @ Cincinnati Zoo 7/95 New to town, not a friend within a country mile, except my girlfriend and my brother in from Jersey. Law school was weeks away, and my first few experiences in Cincinnati had been awful. Who could ask for a better bill? Potential Golden Smog sing-alongs (side band including members of Wilco and the Jayhawks) in addition to beers and sets from 2 of my favorite bands. I must admit the opening set from Wilco was a little dry. They played relatively rote versions of songs off of "A.M" and didn't have their typical energy. Next up, though, the Jayhawks were rollicking. Apparently, they have a pretty decent following in the 'nati, and they mixed things up nicely. Bassist Marc Perlman offered up his take on "You Ain't Goin Nowhere," and Victoria Williams joined the band for a cover of Neil's "Don't Let it Bring You Down." Mark Olson and Victoria were smiles thoughout (they're married), and the ensuing departure of Olson from the band to move to Joshua Tree with Victoria came as no surprise. Those two guys from Austin became best friends quickly. We were swapping beers and road stories and, of course, made grand plans for a future road trip. We didn't get any Smog, but hell it was a fun sunny afternoon. Lc. HOME |
