Wilco @ the Abbey Pub

The Abbey Pub show was special for a number of reasons.  First of all, it was the Chicago premiere of the new Wilco, which now consists of only four pieces: founding members Jeff Tweedy and John Stirratt, and new drummer Glenn Kotche and new multi-instrumentalist LeRoy Bach.  Next, I spent the show with Cincinnatians Dan Klepal and his terrific girlfriend Angie.  The show opened with "Always in Love" and proceeded through a wide array of songs new and old.  Nothing from the Tupelo closet, but we did get "Pick Up the Change" and "Should've Been in Love", two gems from my favorite Wilco record, "A.M".  We also were treated to a handful of new songs, including "I'm the Man Who Loves You" and "Ashes of American Flags".  Tweedy's lead work was a little shaky, and LeRoy seemed less comfortable than tight cowboy boots, but it's early yet.  The drumming of Kotche was outstanding, and I look forward to the new things this band is bound to try in the coming months.
