| Son Volt @ the 7th Street Entry, Minneapolis, 6.16.95 Two weeks prior to moving to Cincinnati for law school, I was lucky enough to catch Son Volt's first two shows ever, both at 7th Street Entry. The anticipation was pretty huge in our little music community. The 11x17s listed the band as "Sun Volt featuring the Uncle Tupelo guys Jay Farrar and Mike Heidorn." We had heard that Jay had regrouped under the name Grain, and thus it was confusing. In what must have been a room temperature of 105 degrees, Jay and band tore through a set of mainly originals, including the wonderful "Windfall," which to this day can bring tears to my eyes. They were gracious enough to mix in some Tupelo stuff, including "Postcard," "Fifteen Keys" and "Slate." The band was a bit loose, but it was clear we were seeing something special. "Trace," the band's debut, would soon be released to universal acclaim. I won't ever forget those first 2 nights. It was a time when I was first being introduced to this wonderful music. I had heard the Jayhawks play an in-studio set at Cities 97 previously and couldn't believe how incredible they sounded. Son Volt continued to bring me along, out from the belief that if they're playing Kansas and Journey on the radio, then they must be good. Lc. HOME |
