| The Blacks @ Brownies...CMJ Music Festival They had to realize that they had to be on. The buzz was akin to the moments leading up to the Kentucky Derby. ...and they're off!!!!! If the Blacks don't kick ass then GW is qualified for office. Sprinkled among the "hits" were some choice covers ("Goin' Out West" by T. Waits; a Sam Cooke cut), some chestnuts by request only ("Tortured Holiday"), and a bevy of tracks from their latest record, "Just Like Home." Gina Black is asserting herself as a true rock goddess, slapping that stand-up bass like a dominatrix. Danny Black is "on his head." He is so locked in he needs Houdini's advice. Highlights of the all-too-brief set were "God Rest my Bones," "Fake Out Jesus," "Take Me Now," and "Dolly Horrorshow," as well as the aforementioned Waits cover.
