| I find that I really have trouble identifying the accented syllable. What can I do? Practice saying the word aloud and raise your hand on the accented syllable as you look at the word. If that doesn't help, try saying the word while placing the back of your hand on the bottom of your chin. If your chin moves down as you say one syllable of the word, that's the accented one! | ||||||||||||||||||||

| What can I do if I'm not satisfied with my vocabulary grades? Many students find it helpful to make vocab index cards. Here's how. At the beginning of each unit, write down each new word on the center of both sides of an index card. On one side of the card, record all features of the word. You can even color code word cards so that all nouns are recorded on pink cards, etc. Color coding each element of the word with a different color of ink is also effective! Once cards are made, share with a fellow eighth-grader, and take turns quizzing each other. You'll both improve your vocab grades! Can I study ahead? Yes! That's a great idea. If you have time to get ahead on the weekend or whenever, go for it! |

| Eighth grade students use Vocabulary Workshop, a thorough and intensive vocabulary program. Students are tested on the following elements of each word: part of speech, accented syllable, definition, synonym, and antonym. Each unit consists of twenty words; however, students are only introduced to ten words per week. Every other Friday, students have a test on an entire unit of words. |
