Union Pacific BigBoy 4-8-8-4 Return to Home Page

Here is my latest model In POV-Ray of a Union Pacific BigBoy 4018 4-8-8-4 Steam Locomotive. Thanks to Bram Lambrecht for the highway POV files to render this Locomotive, I have modified the files some replacing the roadway with more grass.

The BigBoy locomotive was articulated about a pin mounted behind the front set drivers. In other words, the front 4-wheel truck was a standard pivoting truck. Then, the front drivers (8 wheel truck) was on a pivot, allowing a much greater displacement around curves, The rear driver was almost stationary, as was the rear trucks (4 wheel). They both pivoted, but, not that much. The actual boiler and super structure was not articulated, just the chassis and frame.

Thanks to Jonathan Landon for this in formation, he can be found at the Big Boy Main Page.

This model is modeled after the UP 4018 which is now under restoration. BigBoy 4018. Although it is not quite an accurate replica I have modified the original articulation to fit LEGO track and am in the process of building it to run. I will later show the actual model, I am not quite finished with it (I still need 8 large wheels. Like these:

194 http://www.lugnet.com/pause/search/?query=194

390-2 http://www.lugnet.com/pause/search/?query=390-2

396 http://www.lugnet.com/pause/search/?query=396

They are red 1 3/8" in diameter without the rubber wheel and 1/4" wide or the wheels in set 190 http://www.lugnet.com/pause/search/?query=190 . These are the same size but solid with 12 studs. If you know where I can get some or if someone has some they want to sell or trade for please let me know.

Some stats on this model:

This locomotive has 32 wheels including the tender which has 7 pair of wheels and is at lest 112 or so studs long and 8 studs wide (the only way to go). The locomotive has 2 pivot points and has 6 articulation points. The two sets of drive wheels are articulated in between the second and third pair of wheels and the front truck and rear truck are attached to the drive wheels by a 2x4 hinge plate. The pivot point in the front is on the third and fourth pair of wheels, this is to push the wheels in front which works better, and the pivot point in back is over the rear truck for the same reason and to provide weight to the 9v engine. And no I did not forget the drive arms. I have not yet figured out to articulate the drive arms. The tender has 2 pivot points and 2 articulation points on the rear set of wheels at the second and third wheels and on the third and forth wheels. The pivot points are on the 9v engine and the fourth and fifth pair of wheels. The locomotive and tender has 776 pieces including the 7 track pieces. More pictures will be posted as soon as I can finish finding the wheels.

Here are the DAT files for Ldraw : bigboy.zip

I also made a display DAT file and am working on a POV-Ray.Dspybgby.zip
