VSS (Vinovka Snaiperskaja Spetsialnaya = Special
Sniper Rifle) was designed for special operations and was adopted by Russian
Military and Special Law Reinforcement units in 1987. It ensures noiseless and
flashless firing by using a special 9-mm cartridge. It has fighting qualities
which outperform the parameters of foreign counterparts and fully meet their
designated missions. No armor vest can resist the high penetrating and stopping
power of the bullet. Noise level of VSS is as low as 130dB, and is equivalet
to noise of .22 unsilenced rifle, so the report of the weapon becomes virtually
indistinguishable against the background of usual urban noise. The firing accuracy,
high in itself, may be enhanced by an optical or a night sight, which can be
attached to appropriate mounts. The sniper rifle has a fixed frame wooden butt.
For secret carry, the sniper rifle may be broken down into its components and
placed in a carrying case. VSS was (and is) used in all local conflicts that
Russian Army was involved in last decade.
