SV-98 (Snaiperskaya Vintovka model 1998) was
devloped by IzhMash (Izhevsk Mashinebuilding Plant) and based on proven sporting
rifle Record-CISM. It was developed in the great need of a true bolt action
sniper rifle which can be used for really accurate shooting. (Because Dragunov
SVD is not a real sniper, but a Designated Marksman rifle).
The stock is made from laminated plywood. On special
order it can be molded from glassfibre-reinforced polyamide too. The foregrip
(handguard) has two slot-type ventilation openings. The pistol grip is checkered.
The buttstock features fully adjustable cheekpiece and buttplate - a very important
factor for ergonomical convenience of a shooter. Barrel is cold hammered, and
is a free-floating one. The muzzle is equipped with the flash suppressor, typical
for the AK family of machineguns, known for their efficiency. The base of the
front sight is original, but the sight itself and the hood, along with rear
sight assembly, are derived from the SVD construction. Operated at shorter ranges
with open iron sights, SV-98 can be equipped with an anti-glare strip. The trigger
is also adjustable. The telescopic bipod is attached to the front bottom end
of the handguard.
Soon it will ne awailable in .338 Lapua Magnum caliber too
