Essex Engine Page

I am in the process of taking apart my engine, and rebuilding it little by little. No mean feat, considering it is not the original Land Rover engine, but a Ford 3.0L V6 called an "Essex" after the plant where it was manufactured.

Getting the engine out by myself was not fun, but the hoist made a huge difference!

Once the cylinder heads came off, it was time to start cleaning and inspecting.

This is what the intake manifold looked like when it came off. Lots of goo and some clogged passages. Is this thing worth porting on my own?

These are the timing gears, and they seem to be in great shape. Question: how do I get the camshaft out - do I have to remove the bolt on the end, then take off the timing gear?

The starter motor is a Lucas 2M100, and it was working pretty well when it came out. Any suggestions? Should I do a re-build? I want to make sure that it does not crap out on me in another month. What is a suitable swap for this?

Stay tuned for more pics and updates. And of course, I am always looking for advice!
