| Home Surname List Name Index Sources Email Us | Descendants of Robert Land and Susanna AtkinsTo my grandmother Hazel Mae Land Davis who instilled in me the importance of knowing my heritage. To my children Robert, David and Kimberly and my grandchildren Benjamin, Nathaniel, Katrina, Jewel, Shea and Samantha so they may know their past as they build their future. Preface My interest in genealogy began long before I ever heard the word. I was blessed to live near my grandparents and to have a grandmother who spent hours telling me family stories. This genealogy is far from complete. Material was obtained from Bible records, gravestone inscriptions, official records from courthouses, censuses, libraries, family remembrances and personal interviews. Omissions and errors were not intentional but due to lack of information or misinformation. A special thank you to all who generously shared their research and all of those who contributed. Information from the book Elora, written in 1975 by John Connon: "In the year 1841, Adam Gatherer and his wife, with their son in law Joseph Laird, arrived at the village (Elora). They came from Scotland with the intention of settling in Elora, to be near friends already here, and they built a house near James Ferrie's. On their arrival in Montreal they met with Thomas Land and his wife, and 3 sons, Ephraim, Thomas and Henry, who were traveling westward with the intention of living at Brantford, but the friendship then formed with Mr. Laird, caused the Land family to come with them to Elora instead. Mr. Land built a house and shop on the north corner of Victoria and Woolwich Streets, where he and his sons worked; the father being a weaver and his 3 sons, shoemakers. Of this family, Ephraim Land was best known in Elora because he lived here for 59 years. He was born at Columpton, in Devonshire, England, in 1814. In 1831 he emigrated, with his parents, to Prince Edward Island where they remained 10 years and then came to Elora. He died August 9th, 1900, and Mrs. Land on March 30th, 1908, she having been a resident of Elora for 72 years." In the 1851 census, all the Land family are Methodist and indicate that they were born in England, except Henry, who says he was born in Scotland. Whether or not this was a mistake on the census-taker's part, I don't know, but until I see otherwise, I have to go with Scotland I guess. The family is in the Pilkington, Wellington census (1851) on pages 61, 63 and 67 as 1 weaver (the father) and 3 shoemakers (the sons).
