ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
This little paper was
originally put together around thirty five years ago from copious notes from various sources such as old periodicals and newspapers,
microfilm, church registers, cemetery headstone inscriptions, etc.
Especially valuable were the interviews with some of the older folk
who were still around at that time. It was truly amazing to discover with
follow-up research how accurate was the oral tradition.
Every reasonable effort was made to acknowledge those sources
but the chances are that a few excerpts may have found their way,
without being specifically identified, into the narrative. Some of
those who rendered special assistance were:
Mr. Gordon Duff for the use of his file on the Pitts family, the
registrar of the Newfoundland Archives, the staff of the Registry of Deeds and Dept. of Vital Statistics,
and professor K. Matthews for guidance in source materials. Others
with a helping hand in this project were:
Messrs. Addison Bown, Alfred Rees, Gerald Rees, James A. Rees Jr., George
Hiscock, Leonard Rees,
Michael Stoyles, Stephen Hammond and Stanley Rees.
I wish also to thank
Debbie for her help with proofreading the on-line revision, and special
thanks to Martha without whose keen interest and technical expertise this
web page might never have seen
the light of day.
