| Starflight is a computer game. I got my greedy little hands on this piece of world class entertainment at Christmas the year that my dad got us a Tandy 1000HX from Radio Shack. The old war horse (the Tandy, not my dad) has long since passed away, but Starflight has always fascinated me. It had all the grand scope of Star Wars, even without the wizardry of Industrial Light and Magic. In fact, Starflight had incredibly low-tech, pixel by pixel graphics. The kicker was that interaction with aliens, simulated archaeology and the gripping story persuaded the imagination to go into overdrive. That, I think, is what made Starflight the benchmark for science fiction games -- and storytelling in the electronic medium. Starflight was created by Alec Kercso, Rod McConnell, TC Lee, Bob Gonsalves and Greg Johnson in 1986. A sequel followed in 1989, which was just as excellent as the original. Now, a decade later, they're gracious enough to allow their fans to work unhindered on a public domain project that will make Starflight a trilogy. Upon discovering the energetic Starflight fandom on the internet, I began writing stories based in the fictional Starflight universe. I've had entirely too much fun in the process and met a bunch of interesting people to boot. I've also created a page called "the Jova Lounge," which is something of an in-character spaceport based on my stories. Its "tiki lounge"-style format is aesthetically appalling, but somehow cozy and inviting. If you absolutely must copy graphics from the Jova Lounge...please do so. And drop me a line -- I'd love to hear what you think about the page, the stories, Starflight, and any sightings of Habby Loman. -- "Bliff," 1999 |
