However, once the war with the Dominion began, patriotism, a need for a change of scenery and a hunger for adventure drove Robert to enlist in the Starfleet Marines. His parents and other family members were disgusted with his actions. They made several attempts, without his knowledge, to negate his enlistment. When that failed, they attempted to pursuade Robert that if he was going off to war, he should at least join as an officer. When that failed, attempts were made again to purchase a commission in either Starfleet or Starfleet Marines. When a commission of Ensign was secured onboard the USS Niagra, Robert politely refused. In retribution, he was then fired by his parents from his position of management of the farm. The job was then turned over to his younger brother Timothy.
After completeing basic training, Robert was assigned as a port-side gunner on board a jump ship responsible for transporting troops from starships to the frontline. However, after being involved in several combat situations where he performed above and beyond the call of duty, Robert was transferred to the jump ship "Pitcairn", where he remained until his transfer to the marine detachment on board the USS Ticonderoga.
However, the Pitcairn's assignment was primarily reconnaisance, not troop deployment. As a result, Robert's duties doubled to not only include providing cover for deploying troops, but also to participation in numerous solo and group recon missions behind the Dominion front.
His bravery, combined with heavy casualties, resulted in a promotion, a year after his enlistment, to the rank of private, first class. While participating on a scouting mission on Tiberius IV, Pickering singlehandedly held off a Dominion company while his fellow marines withdrew to Federation positions. Barely escaping with his life, Pickering spent the next several days behind enemy lines, collecting vital data to assist the Federation cause on that planet. As a result of his performance, he was promoted to the rank of corporal. Since Tiberius IV, he has participated in several more successful recon missions on behalf of the Federation Marines.
Robert was transferred to the Ticonderoga on 9909.01. Since his arrival onboard the vessel, he has continuously served with Marine Ops Force Alpha. At the conclusion of the Dominion War, Robert re-enlisted in the marines for an eight year term, with at least five years of service required.
