History:
Ian Connor MacLeod was born in Lockerbie, Scotland in 2314. His father was an engineer at the Utopia Planatia shipyards and his mother owned and operated a restaurant. Ian grew up a bit of a rebel. He had several minor contacts with the law growing up, nothing more serious than fighting and gambling.
He rejected his father's attempts to drag him into engineering. Instead, Ian joined Starfleet Academy in 2332 where his studies all directed him into security/tactical training. Eighteen months after he graduated and was assigned as an ensign to his first starship, the USS Lexington, MacLeod caught the attention of recruiters in Starfleet Intelligence.
Ian was under the scrutiny of his commander, who thought the young upstart was too much of a daredevil and risk-taker. Starfleet Intelligence recruited MacLeod as a special operations commando assigned to a covert unit known as The Ghosts.
MacLeod's early operations with the Ghosts involved a host of missions against a variety of targets.
- 2333-35 -- Fought in the Federation/Ferengi Alliance border wars. Was sent on 27 individual special operations during this period of time. Received 8 honors for marksmanship, valor and for being wounded in the line of duty. MacLeod had 24 confirmed kills. He was promoted in 2334 to the rank of lieutenant junior grade.
- 2335-37 -- Sent on 21 special operations missions against targets such as the Akamarian Gatherers, the Orion pirates, the Romulans and the Sheliak. MacLeod earned 5 medals for valor and for being wounded in the line on duty. He had 38 confirmed kills during this period. He was promoted to the rank of full lieutenant in 2337.
- 2337-48 -- Spent these years attached to a Ghost unit which was assigned to anti-terrorist and anti-criminal activity. Engaged a number of terrorist and criminal factions during this time. In one incident, MacLeod saved the Federation president from an assassination plot by a radical religious sect from Rigel. MacLeod had 12 confirmed kills during this time. He received a medal of honor for saving the president, and earned a promotion to lieutenant commander in 2345.
- 2348-2364 -- The Ghosts spent much of these years involved in operations against the Cardassian Union as tensions between them and the Federation grew and eventually turned into a war. MacLeod logged 25 missions against the Cardassians, most of which were sabotage and assassination ops. He is credited with the assassination of Legate Durak, a radical Cardassian politician who signed the death warrant for 246 Federation POWs in 2358. MacLeod was promoted to commander in 2359 and was given command of his own Ghost unit. He had 75 confirmed kills during the war. He met and fell in love with a young woman in his unit in 2348 and they had a child together. Six months after returning to duty following the birth, she was captured on a mission and died in a Cardassian prison. SIDENOTE: He spent some of this time during this period working with and for Admiral Erik Jaegar and Admiral Sorvek, who were then assigned to Starfleet Intelligence operations.
- 2364-2367 -- The Ghosts were disbanded after the war and were reassigned to other various Starfleet outlets. MacLeod was sent to Starfleet Intelligence's training facility in New Berlin, Luna. There he trained SI recruits in special weapons and tactics.
- 2367 -- MacLeod was sent on two covert operations into Klingon space during the Klingon Civil War between the forces of Gowron and Duras. While the details of the mission are classified, his efforts helped Gowron remain in control of the Empire, leading to an eventual victory for his forces.
- 2368-2371 -- MacLeod spent this time back on Luna training operatives.
- 2372 -- Was offered a promotion to captain and a command position at Starfleet Headquarters, in charge of special operations. Uncomfortable with command, MacLeod declined the offer and opted for retirement. His request was granted.
Ian retired to his home in Scotland. He spent much of his time hunting game with his dog, working out and acting as a security consultant to Federation businesses.
In 2376, at the height of the Dominion War, MacLeod's nephew, Ensign Rory Glencairn, was killed when the Dominion destroyed the ship he was serving aboard, the USS Zeus. MacLeod was enraged at Rory's death and the mounting death toll so he decided he wanted to do something about it. So he contacted Starfleet and asked to be reactivated.
Starfleet wanted to, again, place him in the captain's chair. They offered him the rank captain and command of the new USS Resolution, but he indicated he wanted back into covert ops. Starfleet at first declined due to his age, but he asked Admiral Sorvek, whom he worked alongside on operations during the Cardassian War, to help him out and Sorvek agreed.
Sorvek put MacLeod in Shadow Ops training, which he passed with flying colors, then had him reactivated. MacLeod was sent on a couple of brief recon missions into Cardassian space, which he accomplished without major incident, then he was assigned as first officer of the USS Fearless, a Shadow Ops ship.
During his time aboard the USS Fearless, MacLeod discovered that a young half-Klingon woman serving as one of the Shadow operatives on the ship was in fact his daughter. Lt. Chas'naH learned knew only that her father was a Starfleet officer whom her mother has a brief encounter with once, 25 years earlier. SHe decided to have a DNA test run and cross-referenced with Starfleet files. Ironically, her father turned out to be MacLeod, who never knew he had a daughter. The two gradually became close during his time aboard the Fearless.
In early 2377, with the war over and MacLeod uncomfortable about being a superior officer over his daughter, he decided to once again retire. But when he filed his official paperwork with Admiral Sorvek, the Vulcan admiral offered him command of a new Shadow Ops vessel, the USS Valkyrie. MacLeod reluctantly accepted and assumed command of the new ship shortly thereafter.
Ian MacLeod is an expert marksman and hand-to-hand combat specialist. He also has experience in tactical systems, demolitions, suborbital insertion and piloting.
