SECOND GRADE
READ, READ, READ to your child and have them read to you! *Reading to your child is just as important as having them read to you! Take turns reading chapter books together. Create a family journal and add entries for special holidays, family trips, birthday parties, etc. Practice math “fact families” addition/subtraction and multiplication/division make flash cards together…make it fun!!!

| LANGUAGE ARTS
CURRICULUM In 2nd Grade we use the Literacy Tree Reading Program.
Literacy Tree Units At Kettering the MLPP (Michigan
Literacy Progress Profile) and DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) are used to evaluate each student’s instruction level, plan for classroom instruction, and to evaluate student learning.
Although language arts instruction
varies based on the needs of each individual student, in 2nd grade these
are the areas of focus for mastery learning…
Oral Reading and Retelling
We use the Four Block model (guided
reading, independent reading, writing, and phonics)

MATH CURRICULUM
Our new math program is called Investigations. This program is aligned with the Michigan Mathematics Curriculum. Keeping in mind that no one math program reaches all learners, many supplemental materials are used by our teachers to promote success for all! Accelerated Math program is available for grades 1-5. SOCIAL STUDIES CURRICULUM
Our social studies curriculum is aligned with the Michigan Curriculum Framework. Each year’s curriculum K-5 incorporates Historical Perspective, Geographic Perspective, Civic Perspective, Economic Perspective, Inquiry, Public Discourse and Decision Making, Citizen Involvement, Core Democratic Values, Constitutional Principles, Economic Principles, and Geographic Themes. 2nd Grade Social Studies Units
