FIRST GRADE
READ, READ, READ to your child and have them read to you! *Make sure your child knows all their letters and sounds (especially the different sounds vowels make). Work on blends (sh, ch, th, etc.) and chunks (at, ight, ould, etc.) *Increase the amount of words your child can read. Make flash cards of the high frequency words in your homework kits…make sure your child can read and spell them correctly. *Before dinner have your child
sit down for 5-10 minutes and write as many words as they can. In
just a few short weeks you will be amazed at how many new words they have
learned. This also gives you a few minutes of quiet time!!!

| LANGUAGE ARTS CURRICULUM
In 1st Grade we use the Literacy Tree Reading Program.
Literacy Tree Units At Kettering the MLPP (Michigan
Literacy Progress Profile) and DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) are used to evaluate each student’s instruction
level, plan for classroom instruction, and to evaluate student learning.
Although language arts instruction
varies based on the needs of each individual student, in 1st grade these
are the areas of focus for mastery learning…
Sound Identification
We use the Four Block model
The Accelerated Reader program
tests kids on books at their independent reading level.
