day one
After months of planning, weeks of final preparation, and one crazy but unforgettable day, we rewarded ourselves with a little R&R in paradise. We spent eight days and seven nights on the beautiful island of Maui! What an incredible island with so much to do and see. Our stay at the Four Seasons Resort at Wailea provided us with a breath-taking ocean view from our room and easy access to the white sands and warm waters of the beach.

Our day began with a five-hour flight on ATA. We left San Francisco at 8am, but thanks to the time change, we arrived in Maui at 10am! Our flight wasn't too bad. They served us quite a bit of snacks (an upgrade from the Southwest peanuts) and the on-flight movie was The Pacifier. Lana and I agreed it was a lot better than we thought it would be, but still not worth paying money to watch in the theater. Upon landing at the airport, we ran into hot temperatures and humid heat, quite the change from typical San Francisco weather. It had also been raining in the morning and would eventually rain a little bit during our stay on the island. Everyone joked how we must have brought the rain with us from San Francisco, to which I cordially replied, "Yes, and I also brought a can of whoop-@$$ so you better shut your pie-hole. Thank you."

We originally had reserved a Jeep Wrangler to help us break Hawaiian speed laws, but while waiting in line, we saw someone drive off in a PT Cruiser convertible. Needless to say, we upgraded and were extremely satisfied with our little "bad boy". We highly recommend the PT Cruiser convertible; it made driving the narrow and dangerous paths of the Hana Highway somewhat less perilous (but still equally as nauseating) and nothing beats dropping the top and feeling the wind blow through our hair (or at least through Lana's hair)!

Our first day on Maui was spent relaxing in the hotel room, checking out the local shopping scene, and eating delicious food. We killed two birds with one stone at The Shops at Wailea, a very quaint and appropriately-named shopping mall with restaurants just down the road from the Four Seasons. We ate lunch at Cheeseburgers, Mai Tais, and Rock N' Roll. We each had an Island Style Cheeseburger with grilled pineapple, seasoned fries, and ice-cold Mai Tais (fortunately for us, they were fresh out of Rock N' Roll).

For dinner, we ate at Wolfgang Puck's Spago, which was conveniently located in the hotel. Lana had the macadamia and ginger crusted salmon and I had the opakapaka (pink snapper) with wasabi mashed potatoes. We washed it all down with a chocolate souffle with kona coffee, chocolate, and vanilla ice cream and a passion fruit cream pie. Great artery-cloggin' action!
