Angel in the Dumpster
A blue shoebox
Marked “Angel”
Held the remains
Of the class room’s
Pet guinea pig.
I carried the box
Down to the dumpster,
With a silent prayer
Thanking God
It was rainy out.
No children outside
Meant they didn’t know
What I had to do,
So they couldn’t
Think that I was mean.
I never knew that
An animal that was
Mostly fur
Could weigh so much.
I said a silent prayer
For Angel’s soul,
Then dropped the box
Into the dumpster,
Grateful for the clouds,
Crying just enough
To cover up mine.
