Republic of Ireland
Go back to the start
This page contains pictures from our groovy 6 day tour of The republic of Ireland

This was quite an eventful tour. Firstly, the tailpipe fell off the bus, and became a passenger on the backseat along with everyone else.

Then at Kylemore Abbey, an impatient grumpy Irish tour bus driver (smelling strongly of whisky) leapt into our bus and tried to move it on because he thought we were parked in his way

The last shock was finding out that Jack Doolan in that song 'The Wild Colonial Boy' is actually 'Jack Duggan' (we saw the pub and heard the song to prove it!)

P.S. If you are Catholic and you don't have a sense of humour, stop here!!!
Your basic street sign found in the town of Knock (site of an official miracle!)
Check out what's actually written on the signs.
If you want, you can go buy a small plastic bottle in the shape of the virgin Mary (and various other icons) for 50 Euro cents and fill it up with real official Holy Water!
Doolough Valley. Though it's beautiful, it has a dark side.
During the irish potato famine, a group of starving Irish natives toiled through this valley for three days to ask their english landowner for food... but they were refused and many died on the walk back home.
Kylemore Abbey. This was once a private residence but after tragic circumstances, the owner sold up and it is now home to Connemaras Benedictine Nuns.

This is where the grumpy (and we think slightly drunk) Irish driver from another tour bus jumped in and tried to move our bus !!
Dogs Bay.
I certainly didn't expect to be frolicking on golden beaches in Ireland!
This is one of many 'round towers' in Ireland. This was where the defenceless natives would run and hide from various maurauders.

The door is actually a couple of metres off the ground, and the natives would climb in and pull the ladder up after them
then wait till the Vikings/anti social elements/uninvited guests got sick of burning and pillaging, and left.
A Dolmen. This is an ancient burial cairn. Its thought to be an older construction than Stonehenge, but I dunno, those ropes look pretty new.
Galway, where sheeps shelter in the shade from stifling 10 degree C heat!!
It looks to me like this nun is on the phone to God. Stop hogging the phone!
Sunset by the spectacular cliffs of Moher
The view out to sea from Dingle Peninsula on Slea Head drive. Look carefully and you can make out 'the sleeping giant'
Dingle Peninsula, where much of 'Far and Away' was filmed (if you have had the misfortune of seeing that movie)
Torc Falls, in Killarney national park
The Rock of Cashel (with a load of what I guess you would call birds of Cashel flying around?)
This is at the County Tipperary, and was the site of much burning, bloodshed and mayhem. Oh there was a bit of praying too.
Inside the Cathedral at The Rock of Cashel.
Rock of Dunamese. I can't tell you much about this because my Google Search wasn't very helpful!!
