Scotland

I'm a Tattie, get me out of here!
Go back to the start
This page contains pictures from our excellent 6 day haggis trip through Scotland.
The tour was titled "I'm a Tattie, get me out of here" but I won't bother to explain why.... I will tell you that tattie is 'Scottish' for a potato. Puzzled yet?

Even before we started the tour we ran into Kristy (friend of Nats - you know everyone!) in our hostel in Edinburgh

Then on the first day we rolled up to a ruin (lots of ruins in Scotland) which turned out to be the church and resting place for the MacLaren clan (in case you haven't been following, thats Alanas family line)

The rest of the week was spent on a bumpy bus, trying to decipher what our crazy Scottish guide/driver/tale teller/entertainer was saying!

Basically we all had an excellent time!

I also found the history very interesting. On the final day we visited Culloden battlefield, this was the battle that marked the end of catholicism, and the 'old' highland way of life.

The first day

Sunset by Edinburgh castle
Robert the Bruce, 'The Man', who repelled the English and started the Stuart royal family in Scotland
The castle monument to William Wallace, the guy that the movie 'Braveheart' is all about
Hamish the 'Hairy Coooo' (the last o is silent in 'Coooo'). These beasts are also known as Highland Cows
He was very friendly, just watch out for the horns!!
Balquidder, resting place and chapel of the McLarens.
The old road to Glencoe. This was the road taken by the Campbells (spit!) on their way to treacherously slaughter the McDonalds in their sleep
A word of advice, don't go to Glencoe if your last name is Campbell!!!
This was still the first day and we all went for a bit of a hike through the snow and heather and got right into the tragic feeling of the place.
The champion quiz team, 'The Jacobites'.
From Left: Bron,Caeliegh,Kelly,Raylene,Helen,Nick,Alana
Things only went downhill from here!!
Helen (right): Look at my new S-Club-7 dance steps
Bron (left): Get her away from me

The Isle of Skye

This is Glen Finnon. Three interesting things happened here.
Firstly it was were the last Jacobite uprising was marshalled by Bonnie Prince Charlie
Secondly, its where they filmed some of the train scenes in Harry Potter
Lastly, its where I almost got blown off the side of the hill by a short fierce gale!!
The monument to Bonnie Prince Charlie (looking the other way from the previous picture) If you don't know about the reformation, Bonnie Prince Charlie, The Jacobites etc., Sorry I'm not gonna explain!!!
Graham, our tour guide/driver/storyteller/crazy man, who is about to seperate my head from my shoulders
Note Kristy and Alana to the right, trying to look inconspicuous!!!
This is the ruins of a castle at Fort William
If you look carefully you can see a waterfall coming through the exposed roots of this tree
This is on the hillside near Glen Nevis
Myself with Glen Nevis in the background, where much of Braveheart was filmed
One of my favourite pictures, this is one of the many beautiful lochs on the Isle of Skye.
On the banks of Sligachan, by the bridge, where we all dipped our faces in running water.
This means that we will be forever good looking, or so the story goes. It hasn't worked so far though!
The bridge over Sligachan
Its good to have a couple of wrecked volvos in your backyard, you never know when they'll come in handy, just ask my Dad :)
Even this guy who lives in remote Western Skye knows that
A couple of Silkies (Scottish mermaid type creatures).
This is at Leealt Falls, where it is said that the silkies congregate on midsummers day.
Eilan Donan castle (home of the McCraes)
During its lifetime this castle was utterly destroyed and then rebuilt exactly to the original plans
What the...?
A couple of magnificent views of the river Affric.
This is inside a national park containing one of the few remaining Caledonian Pine forests.
Clava Cairns, some ancient stone circles surrounded by sleepy farmland, fences and cows.

The final night/Loch Ness

Urquhart Castle on Loch Ness where most sightings of the loch ness monster have occured.
I didn't have any luck though.
Loch Ness. Hang on, that rock looks a lot like a sea monsters bum!!
Charlies angels: Kirsty (couldn't get her off the chair all night), Helen and Chinney
All the fellas on the final night
From left: 'Wisey', Dwayne, Mick (partially obscured as usual), Steve (was fought over by two barmaids on the isle of Skye)
Nathan, Ryan, and Ryans nipple (onya mate), Karl, 'Tattie', Scott (about to head off and take a dump maybe?), Daniel (looking for a tasty meal), Ben (looking on in bemusement), someones arm! (Chinney I think)
On the final day, Cille Choirill Church. Spooky but beautiful. Thats Ben Nevis in the background.
