I know, county, country, country. Creeks, rivers, trees, moss, swamps, are you stuck in a rut? Ok. I consede. I do enjoy the out of doors, out of traffic, out of noise.  But, every article should have a little humanity to spice it up. So, this article's "spice" and mystery will be Elizabeth.
I crossed La.10 and found my way, no founding involved, I just ended up on the south side of Elizabeth. Actually, south is where the heretofore undiscoverd town of Elizabeth is. Elizabeth is a neat, clean little community housing, what appears to be, residents not new to the neighborhood. I ran up and down the streets and was stuck by what I noticed.
Crossing La.10
I was stuck by the discovery of the old Sinclair Oil Gasoline Station. I don't know where it's income came from. The road it was on turned to gravel just a bit south. It was about a mile from town. Was the lumber industry enough to keep it opened at one time.  Ray Fagan said the picture was a keeper, so I'll keep it.
What Really Stuck Me
(below the pictures)
What really stuck me was the simularity of the houses. This style was all over town. Why?
My first thought was that Elizabeth had been a "Company Town" built by one of the lumber companies.  My wife suggested that they were Sears Co. Catalog homes. You could buy pre-fab homes from Sears at one time. Or, a developer had done a "cookie-cutter" subdivision. My guess is that the homes were built in the  1930's or 1940's. Maybe I'll check it out.
Obviously a nice lot had been set aside for the Courthouse. Plenty of parking space was provided. I should have gone in and done some research. But then I'd have to type some more and that's about it for this  one.
This great area begins west of La.13 and Mamou and goes to the Texas border. It is full of paved and unpaved back roads with surprises and mysteries around every corner. It is a beautiful area to explore. I'll be back. One more thought. That courthouse sure is large for this small community?
A school at one time? Man! I should of asked. Now, I have to go back.
