It started out as just a tingle, an irrational itch I indulged in scratching. I didn’t think about it much; my hair was growing longer and often tickled my shoulders. It wasn’t until lunch that I decided to take a look at the annoying area, to see if I was sporting a new bug bite. After waiting until the bathroom was empty, I pulled my shirt over my head and blinked at the smudged mirror.
Tiny, tawny tinges decorated my upper shoulder blades, spotted like ink leaking through paper. The area was decorated with pink scratches and I mentally made a note to myself to not bother it, even if it itched. Maybe Soubi would have something for it…
I was in agony the rest of the day, ready to cry in frustration by the time I saw my tall friend by the school gates. Brushing Yuiko off, we left and he calmed me with worried words.
When we got to his apartment, I was scratching at my back and not caring about the damage I might be causing my skin. Soubi sat behind me with an anti-itch lotion and I pulled off my shirt, more than ready to relieve the itch. I turned to find the oddest look on his face.
“What is it?” I asked, irritated.
But he just shook his head with a small smile, smoothing on the lotion. I must confess, it made a difference—it felt better.
The next morning I found what he had been smiling about when I saw that more dots had joined the collection, forming the beginnings of an L, V, and two S’s in thin, capital letters.
