Mustard Gas
Mustard gas is a blister agent. When in contact with persperation or moisture on the skin, blisters form and grow. It is a black oily liquid and has been used in wars such as WWI & WWII. In our recent trip to DRDC Suffield a scientist named Scott showed us how detection devices are used to detect mustard. If a drop is placed on a special type of paper it turns the paper red indicating a blister agent. A electronic detector will also read H for blister agent when exposed to this gas. Special suites designed at DRDC Suffield can be worn to protect people working with this agent. A special foam is sprayed on the contaminated area to neutralize the agent. At this military base troops and various groups from all over the world train on safely decontaminating the mustard agent in different scenarios.

How People Can be Exposed to Mustard Gas:  Mustard Gas can be released into the air as a vapour and then a person can become effected through breathing it in and skin and eye contact. If for some reason mustard gas gets into a water supply, it will contaminate the water and then people can develop symptoms from drinking the water.

Symptoms Of Mustard Gas: Skin will become itchy and develop a red color and then will eventually turn to a yellow blister on the affected areas of the body. Eyes can become irratated with pain and swelling. A severe exposure can cause light sensitivity, severe pain, and blindness lasting up to ten hours. Patients of mustard gas may also show symptoms of diarhea, fever, shortness of breath and vomiting.

How people can protect themselves if exposed to mustard gas: If in an area with mustard gas it is best to get to higher ground because mustard gas is heavier than air and will settle in low-lying areas. Removing the mustard gas constantly also helps by doing such things as showering.Remove any clothing that has come in contact with mustard gas and disspose of it in a plastic bag inside of another plastic bag. Your eyes should be flushed with clean water for 5 to ten minutes. If swallowed, do not induce vomiting and give the person milk to drink. Seek medical attention right away!
