The History of Lambda Sigma Tau Sorority

Lambda Sigma Tau Sorority is a Social/Service Sorority officially chartered at both the University of St. Thomas and the College of St. Catherine. It is the ONLY sorority chartered at St. Kate's and one of three at St. Thomas. It is also the only sorority that is chartered to incorporate both a social and service aspect. Membership is granted to any St. Thomas and St. Catherine women completing a five-week pledging process and a short initiation period in which history, traditions, and values of the group are learned. Neither the colleges, nor we permit blackballing (refusing membership to a certain party/parties for superficial, raical, or age reasons) or hazing (requiring pledges to participate in obscene or dangerous acts). Lambda Sigma Tau has existed for 25 years, making it the first sorority chartered and the oldest on both campuses.

Previously Lambda Sigma Tau was affiliated with Tau Kappa Epsilon, a national fraternity at the University of St. Thomas, as the "Little Sisters of TKE." However, when TKE disbanded at St. Thomas, the LIttle Sisters chose to become local and independent; renaming themsevles Lambda Sigma Tau, but still maintaining the long traditions and history of TKE.

As a service sorority, Lambda Sigma Tau's are dedicated to maintaining positive Greek relations between their sorority and other sororities and fraternities at St. Thomas as well as the University of Minnesota and other ACTC schools. We are also dedicated to building strong foundations of sisterhood and friendship within the group, which is done by participating in numerous social activities each semester. One aspect of Lambda Sigma Tau that makes them stand out from other sororities at St. Thomas is their notably strong ties with the fraternities at the University of Minnesota. These ties have been established for many years, allowing their social scope a broader range.

Lambda Sigma Tau is dedicated to developing the bonds of sisterhood and enhancing leadership skills. Our goal is to provide a supportive, fun, and "family" sort of atmosphere, while maintaining strong academic standings.

A sister, to us, is someone who will share your joys, sorrows, and keep you company though your endeavors with support, honesty, loyalty, and celebrating in your accomplishments. A Lambda Sigma Tau is trustworthy, loyal, honest, and dedicated to being the best she can be for herself and for the group.
